The flows and levels of service in a transport network are determined by constructing demand and supply functions so as to incorporate the equilibrium approach more explicitly. The graph theoretic system theory models used in the paper provide a "custom tailored" fit to each individual transportation system as opposed to the formula-oriented models widely prevalent in the transportation literature... Control theoretic techniques are applied to develop two new models for predicting human operator performance when monitoring an automatically controlled system. In one case it is assumed that the human monitors the instruments in order to rapidly detect failures. A second approach assumes that the instruments are sampled to best reconstruct the system status information. The relation of these mode... View full abstract»

Application of learning automata theory to telephone traffic routing and control is described. Improved network performance is demonstrated through the comparative simulation of learning automata routing and the existing fixed rule alternate routing in simple telephone networks. Learning automata routing results in significantly lower blocking probability when selected overload conditions prevail ... View full abstract»
