The applicability of fuzzy set theory to decision analysis (DA) is examined. It extends the ideas of an earlier paper "Fuzzy decision analysis," by Watson et al. [33]. Particular emphasis is placed on justifying the use of Zadeh's fuzzy calculus to model impression, and an axiomatic system is suggested towards this end. This is seen as an attempt at extending Savage's axioms of subjective probabil... View full abstract»

Interactive methods to solve large-scale problems with multicriteria formulation are proposed. The mixed use of techniques which have proved their eMciency in large-scale dynamic optimization, combined with techniques based on fuzzy set theory, is suggested. The latter enables us to consider inaccuracies, inherent in decisionmakers' judgements, without a significant increase in computational effor... View full abstract»

The sequence of tests chosen by humans in two fault diagnosis tasks are described in terms of a model composed of a rank-ordered set of heuristics or rndes-of-thumb. The identification and evaluation of such models are discussed. The approach is illustrated by modeling the choices of test sequences of 118 subjects in one task and 36 in the other task. The model and subjects are found to agree some... View full abstract»

A feedback model of biped dynamics is proposed where the internal and external forces which act on the skeleton are unified as forces of constraint, some intermittent and some permanent. It is argued that these forces are, in general, functions of the state and inputs of the system. The inputs constitute gravity and muscular forces. This model is particularly suited for understanding the control p... View full abstract»

Multivariate data sets with dependency between observations are described using a feature space representation. The resulting ordered set of points in feature space is termed the pattern trajectory. A set of descriptors of the pattern trajectory has been developed. Time-dependent clusters and transition segments form the basic structural description from which both lower level properties, e.g., cl... View full abstract»

Often it is desirable to specify both position and force at the end effector of a manipulator system; however, when the system forms a closed kinematic chain both cannot be realized independently. Active compliance is a trade-off method that can be easily incorporatd into the supervisory control philosophy which is often used to control complex man-machine systems. An example of such a system is t... View full abstract»
