• ### On the polarisation of radiation from double-heterostructure injection lasers

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):569 - 570
Cited by:  Papers (5)
| | PDF (310 KB)

It is shown that the radiation from double heterostructure injection lasers is polarised with the electric field in the plane of the junction (TE waves), owing to mirror reflectivities at the nonnormal angles of incidence which are peculiar to these devices. View full abstract»

• ### Surface-wave delay lines with near-octave bandwidth

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):570 - 572
Cited by:  Papers (3)
| | PDF (488 KB)

Efficient operation of lithium-niobate delay lines over bandwidths approaching one octave is reported. The transducers are of a 3-electrode (N = 1) interdigital design. Broad bandwidth to the series-resonant transducer is obtained by the use of a lumped-element impedance invertor coupling network. A 9.1 ¿s delay line is described, which gives 55% 3 dB bandwidth centred at 235 MHz with 25 dB minim... View full abstract»

• ### Eigenvalue assignment in linear multivariable systems

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):573 - 574

A method is described to assign arbitrary eigenvalues for linear multivariable systems. When the system is not completely controllable, as many arbitrary eigenvalues as the rank of the controllability matrix are assigned. View full abstract»

• ### Transmission parameters of a class of coupled distributed networks

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):574 - 575
| | PDF (209 KB)

It is shown how the equations of a class of coupled distributed networks can be decoupled, and their transmission parameters expressed in terms of those of an equivalent scalar system. View full abstract»

• ### Stabilisation mechanism for 'supercritical' transferred-electron amplifiers

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):575 - 577
Cited by:  Papers (15)
| | PDF (437 KB)

It is shown that a supercritical GaAs c.w. Gunn diode with a cathode doping notch and doping profile sloping upwards from the cathode to anode may act as a stabilised amplifier at high bias voltage. This profile is similar to that in many present-day devices, and may provide a more practical way of increasing the field uniformity so that the noise figure may be reduced, as described by Thim. It is... View full abstract»

• ### Application of point-matching method to scattering from quadrilateral cylinders

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):577 - 579
Cited by:  Papers (3)
| | PDF (507 KB)

The possibility of constructing computer programs with the capability of generating detailed information on the scattering characteristics of a wide class of perfectly conducting cylinders of arbitrary cross-section in the resonance¿ range has made further investigation of the point-matching¿ technique of some interest. In the letter, the utility of the point-matching method is explored for a ... View full abstract»

• ### Generalised star graphs

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):579 - 580
| | PDF (330 KB)

Generalised star graphs are defined, and a general formula is given for the number of (spanning) trees in the incomplete graphs resulting from the deletion of such subgraphs from a complete graph. Multigraph variations of the star are indicated. View full abstract»

• ### Mount-independent equivalent circuit of the S4 diode package

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):580 - 582
Cited by:  Papers (12)
| | PDF (366 KB)

Broadband-admittance measurements have been made on dummy S4 diode packages mounted in a coaxial line. By comparing these with the theoretical admittance of a lumped-component equivalent circuit for the package and its mount similar to that of Getsinger, a consistent set of mount-independent equivalent-circuit parameters for the package has been derived. • ### Resonant techniques for establishing the equivalent circuits of small discontinuities in microstrip

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):582 - 584
Cited by:  Papers (14)
| | PDF (457 KB)

The accurate measurement of small discontinuities in microstrip by conventional means is limited by the imperfections of the microstrip to coaxial transition. By using a resonant technique where such imperfections cause only 2nd-order errors, the equivalent circuit of microstrip discontinuities can be measured. To demonstrate the method, a 90° corner, with and without a chamfer, has been measured... View full abstract»

• ### High-field-current instabilities in InP

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):584 - 585
Cited by:  Papers (1)
| | PDF (321 KB)

Results are reported of computer simulations and further experiments which are related to earlier observations. They are in agreement with the 3-level-transfer theory, and allow domain-mode oscillations under special conditions. View full abstract»

• ### RLC-ladder-network synthesis: signal-flow-graph approach

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):586 - 587
| | PDF (220 KB)

Using signal-flow graphs, a theorem is proved which gives the immittance functions of the ladder network of which the voltage transfer function is to be realised, and then the realisation of a given voltage transfer function by the use of this theorem is illustrated. View full abstract»

• ### Model stability in use of moments to estimate pulse transfer functions

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):587 - 589
Cited by:  Papers (7)
| | PDF (399 KB)

The method of moments, when applied to a stable system, sometimes fails by giving an unstable model. The implications are examined, and an auxiliary performance criterion is proposed which stabilises the model without destroying the simplicity of the method. View full abstract»

• ### Microcomputer interfacing module

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):589 - 590
| | PDF (300 KB)

The design of a microcomputer is presented, which provides a standard and versatile module for computer interfacing. View full abstract»

• ### Maximally flat approximations to the ideal filter as hypergeometric functions

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):591 - 593
Cited by:  Papers (1)
| | PDF (382 KB)

Two families of maximally flat approximations to the ideal filter can be deduced as particular cases of polynomials which are solutions of a hypergeometric equation. By studying the generalised hypergeometric function, one finds a continuous range of filter characteristics. This allows a control of the compromise to be made between the features of the transient response, the amplitude and the phas... View full abstract»

• ### P.c.m. nonlinear counting encoder

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):593 - 594
| | PDF (259 KB)

Companded encoders of high resolution, such as may be required for p.c.m. transmission of high-quality sound-programme signals, can be realised using the `counting¿ principle. In the reported implementation, a reference waveform of ramps of different slopes are generated by integrating the output from a d.a. convenor. View full abstract»

• ### Scattering from a turbulent rocket-exhaust jet illuminated by a plane wave

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):595 - 597
Cited by:  Papers (1)
| | PDF (372 KB)

It has been found possible to describe the addition of noise to a microwave carrier by a rocket-exhaust jet in terms of a simple quantitative model of incoherent volume scattering by the turbulent discontinuities in the jet. The power scattered is spread throughout the noise spectrum by the variation with position in the jet of the magnitude of the mean gas-velocity vector. Comparison between comp... View full abstract»

• ### Scattering from a turbulent rocket-exhaust jet illuminated by a focused microwave beam

Publication Year: 1971, Page(s):597 - 600
Cited by:  Papers (1)
| | PDF (497 KB)

An approximate theory is presented to account for the scattering of focused electromagnetic waves by a turbulent rocket-exhaust jet. The predicted noise spectrum is found to be in good agreement with experimental results obtained at 9 and 14 GHz. However, it is recognised that the transverse-beam configuration is rather insensitive to variations in certain jet parameters, such as the turbulence sc... View full abstract»
