A mathematical solution is given for the design of a quantiser suitable for quantising, with minimum mean-square error, a signal with an exponential amplitude probability-density function. On combining the functions of negative-immittance conversion and positive-immittance inversion in a combined invertor/convertor stage of bridge configuration, a realisation of pure inductance has been achieved using a single operational amplifier of the differential-input type. Heteroepitaxial films of silicon-on-sapphire were used to fabricate lateral bipolar n-p-n transistors. The devices have a common-base direct-current amplification factor of 0.9 and a maximum frequency of oscillation of 2.4 GHz. As a result of the vertical p-n-junction arrangement, small junction areas are possible, e.g. 1Ã10Â¿6cm2, which yield depletion-layer capacitances of 0.02Â¿0.05 pF. View full abstract»

A circuit is described which allows full-wave rectification of from 1.5mV to 5V in amplitude, and from 0 to 200 kHz in frequency. A bridge arrangement is used, with four field-effect transistors connected in the arms of the bridge and switched by the output of a comparator circuit which is used to detect the zero crossingÂ¿ point on the input-signal waveform. The polynomial decompositions due to Calahan and Horowitz can be effectively used for the synthesis of passive RC parallel ladders to realise any zeros of transmission including those on the positive real axis.
