Since 1963 when recording of the human magnetocardiogram (MCG) was first reported, the number of clinical studies has been limited. High-quality tracings can now be easily obtained in special shielded chambers, but problems remain if records are to be made in hospitals without such chambers. Measurement techniques, theory of the MCG, and model studies are discussed. Configuration of the MCG wavefo... View full abstract»

A method for quantifying the relative phase shift characteristics of chart recorders is presented. A test signal of the form (cos wot + A cos 3wot) is used, which when normalized for unequal responses at the two frequencies, provides an independent quantitative measure of relative phase shift which can be detennined from examination of the output record. Ihe ease of implementation and interpretati... View full abstract»

A balloon-tip electromagnetic velocity flow probe was used to measure source pressure Pg and zero-load aortic flow Qs in seven mongrel dogs before and after coronary artery ligation, where Qs is the expected aortic flow at zero aortic input impedance and Pg is the expected left ventricular pressure for the open-circuit condition of the equivalent model of the left ventricle. The source parameters ... View full abstract»

A portable electronic device has been developed that successfully detects rapid eye movement (REM) in sleeping subjects. The development was aimed at exploiting the high correlation between a subject's ability to recall dreams and his abrupt awakening a short time after the onset of REM sleep. The device is of clinical interest as a means of increasing the amount of raw dream material available fo... View full abstract»

The temporal relationship of circular muscle contractions at eight positions spaced at 2.5 cm intervals along the duodenum was determined after administration of test meals and drugs in dogs chronically implanted with strain-gage force transducers. An automatic data analysis system was developed to 1) recognize contractions, 2) measure contractile amplitudes and intercontractile intervals, 3) perf... View full abstract»
