  • The Nature and Etiology of Normal and Alcohol Withdrawal Tremor

Alcohol withdrawal tremor is principally a postural-type tremor. That is, the tremor manifests itself most when the limbs are voluntarily maintained in a stationary position. The tremor of alcohol withdrawal is typically 5 to 20 times as large and approximately the same frequency as normal postural tremor. The fact that withdrawal tremor is uncorrelated in both outstretched hands argues against th... View full abstract»

This paper presents a new method for obtaining plane images perpendicular to the axis of the transducer and discusses some resolution improvement techniques utilizing a computer. The method, called C-mode scan, is carried out by successive application of a conventional B-mode scan, and supplies more information such as the outline, size, and extent of a lesion such as a breast tumor. To improve th... View full abstract»

  • An Improved Correction of Distorted Indicator-Dilution Curves

    Publication Year: 1979, Page(s):18 - 21
Request permission for commercial reuse | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (630 KB)

Venoarterial indicator dilution curves are distorted by non-ideal injection and by the monitoring system. An improved method of correcting these curves is developed assuming that a linear model of perfect mixers in series can be fitted to the physiologic system response as well as to the subsystem responses. An automated electronic system based upon a cylindrical coordinator was constructed for measurement and preliminary computational processing of the heart electrical potentials on the surface of a human torso and of the coordinates of this surface. The potential distribution on the body surface at consecutive instants of time and the geometrical parameters of the body received as the output of the ... View full abstract»

The differential temperature rise in a spherical region stimulating a potential hot spot in the central region of a human head has been determined, takdng into account heat conduction as well as heat convection due to blood flow. The results apply in general to ali cases where the dimensions of the model and the frequency of the incident electromagnetic wave is such that a hot spot is formed near ... View full abstract»

A Zeiss scanning microscope photometer with a monochro-mator was assembled and interfaced with a Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-12 computer to form an automated single-beam microspectrophotometer for making spatial and particularly spectral scans of Romanowsky-stained blood cells. The spectra, covering 400-700 nm, are stored on tape for subsequent data processing. The limitations on the accurac... View full abstract»

  • A Comb-Filtered Noise Generator for Use in Auditory Neurophysiological and Psychophysical Experiments

    Publication Year: 1979, Page(s):43 - 47
    Cited by:  Papers (7)
Request permission for commercial reuse | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (2143 KB)

A digital CMOS comb-filtered noise generator has been developed for use as a stimulus in auditory physiological and psycho-physical experiments. It incorporates two identical, 34-bit shift register pseudo-random noise generators whose outputs are summed and low-pass filtered. By introducing a delay between the generators, a noise power spectrum results which is co-sinusoidal on a linear frequency ... View full abstract»

  • Electrocutaneous Tracking: A Methodology for Evaluating Sensory Feedback Codes

    Publication Year: 1979, Page(s):47 - 49

An objective and relevant methodology for evaluating sensory feedback codes has been developed using electrocutaneous tracking. This methodology involves dynamic (or continuous) interpretation and response by a subject to electrically produced cutaneous sensations. Results from the comparison of ten codes are briefly presented here to show the usefulness of this methodology. A general purpose comp... View full abstract»

  • Modeling of an Active Nerve Fiber in a Finite Volume Conductor and Its Application to the Calculation of Surface Action Potentials

    Publication Year: 1979, Page(s):53 - 56

Potentials within and on the surface of a finite cylindrical volume conductor due to a single active nerve fiber along its center have been calculated by solving Laplace's equation using a relaxation model. The results have enabled the variation of the potential that would be recorded from a surface electrode to be estimated for differing nerve depths and conduction velocities. View full abstract»

  • A Hydraulic Micromanipulator

For biological experiments requiring manipulations under a microscope, it is necessary to have remote control for the manipulator. Available systems offer the required accuracy at a high cost. Passive micromanipulators are economical but are deficient in performance, the most serious defects being the inability to attenuate operator-induced vibrations and lack of speed control The manipulator desc... • A Model for Predicting the Reliability of EEG Power Spectral Density Estimates of Subcortical Spiking Frequency

    Publication Year: 1979, Page(s):58 - 59

A model for predicting the reliability of power spectral density (PSD) indicators of spike-to-spike intervals taken from EEG time series is proposed. The analysis shows that the PSD is corrupted by irregularities in spike spacing and that conditions are improved if a larger number of spikes are included in the EEG epoch. View full abstract»
