    The method and results of high speed streak photography of surface flashover in vacuum are presented. It is shown that the bright phase of the flashover arc bridges a 12.5 mm gap in 0.15 ns. The streak records indicate that the flashover arc is preceded by an intense electron burst from the cathode-insulator junction. View full abstract»

    The mechanism of breakdown on a contaminated insulator surface under High Voltage dc (HVDC) has been studied. A new laboratory contamination technique is proposed, which yields uniformly contaminated test specimens.     Results obtained in paper insulation tests have led to a new definition of the damage as D = K (Vn t)á, when the appearance of partial discharges with 25 pC of apparent charge is used aa a failure criteration.
