This paper describes evidence for the formation of secondary fissure structures, in low-density polyethylene (PE), and in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). These structures can be observed by optical and by scanning electron microscope techniques. The secondary fissures are not a volume effect like spherulites, but are associated with the fracture surface only. An explanation of this effect is giv... View full abstract»

Taking into account the combined electrode and bulk effects, an expression for the high-field filamentary conduction as a function of applied field and temperature for dielectric liquids has been derived. This expression can explain recent experimental results on the field-dependent thermal activation energy for electric conduction in hydrocarbon liquids. View full abstract»

Dielectric properties have been measured, in the frequency range 100 to 100 kHz and in the temperature range -200 to +150°C, for as-received polyimide and for polyimide annealed at 240°C/24 hr. Three loss peaks were found. The structural motions which give rise to these peaks have been determined through a comparison with other data on polyimide, as well as with data on the structurally simi lar... View full abstract»

  • A New Navy Classification Criterion for Insulation Life

Meaningful thermal classification of insulating systems or magnet wires is based on the expected useful life at a given temperature. The Navy had established and used for more than a decade 40000 and 20000 hours as the minimum extrapolated test life at the rating temperature for varnish imaregnated and non-varnish impregnated insulation systems and magnet wires respectively. Following the setting ... View full abstract»

Presented herein are details of an Air Force sponsored manufacturing technology study to establish improved fabrication processes for polyimide printed wiring boards. Comparisons are made between polyimide and conventional epoxy material systems, and data are presented relative to material availability, material and process Characterization, and performance tests. On the basis of comparative tests... View full abstract»

Using a spring-loaded needle against a plane electrode, ac breakdown studies have been made on a crosslinked Ethylene Propylene Diene terpolymer (EPDM) gum at varying electrode separations and crosslink densities. Critical breakdown strength of 3.5 MV/cm at room temperature and 9.0 MV/cm at -60°C were obtained. These values are independent of the crosslink densities of the rubber. The breakdown s... A radiation curable, screen printable conductive ink has been developed for use on thermoplastic circuit boards. The fast application and cure of this solventless material allow mass production of low cost circuits suitable for use with systems that can tolerate higher resistance. In one application, a photoflash array, Flipflash, utilizes a piezoelectric crystal to provide the high voltage necess... View full abstract»

New heat resistant magnet wires having F - H thermal life can be made by overcoating suitable conventional enamels on acrylonitrile copolymer based enamel. Heat resistant glutaroimide and gluaroimidine ringtruc structures were found to be formed during baking and thermal aging for dual coated acrylic enamels, even in an oxidative environment. The ratio of glutaroimide ring formation to oxidation r... View full abstract»
