A description is given of the TIPS electronic table, a common user's model that enables the end user to imagine and anticipate the actions of the system and thus develop it into a professional instrument. The objective of the electronic table design has been to simulate the use of an ordinary worktable/lightbox. The application support packages and system hardware are described, and the applicatio... This method for describing the visibility problem is based on the concept of analyzing the problem utilizing connectivity information. The result is a uniform description of visibility algorithms in terms of two basic functions, the test of projective equivalence and the comparison of the distance from the observer, and the use of connectivity information. This result leads to a hierarchy of visib... View full abstract»

The display of shaded pictures of terrain can take advantage of the geometric properties of the data. In particular, the authors discuss the bilinear interpolation of a surface given by its values of a rectangular grid and extend front and back facing notions to patches. Then they study the clipping problem in this particular context and discuss two hidden surface elimination techniques, priority ... View full abstract»

Robust software for reconstructing a surface from scattered data has been implemented in an interactive system with graphical facilities and with highly modular machine-independent structure. Particular attention is paid to the mathematical capabilities of the system, which consist of a wide range of numerical methods for constructing a smooth bivariate function F(x, y) that approxim... Interactive programming using clever look-up tables can cause applications problems. A simple recursive algorithm is described that avoids difficulties by dividing a multiplane frame buffer into logical layers. This separation and restructuring process can be envisioned as a computer graphics analogy to the display of multiple transparencies with an overhead projector. View full abstract»
