A new computer graphics method that uses stochastic modeling to generate highly realistic random textures has been developed. The stochastic function is applied to the normal vectors instead of the surface position. The fractional Brownian motion (fBm) form of stochastic modeling is extended by allowing different values of the self-similarity parameter h on different recursion levels. The s... The Greek Soil Survey Project involves sampling at a large number of points and the production of maps using these points to define regions of similar soil type. Currently the maps are plotted by manual interpretation of the survey results. This paper investigates one approach to reducing the amount of manual processing required, beginning the automated process from the point data. The method empl... View full abstract»

Interactive manipulation techniques can be used to analyze anatomic structural deformities and to simulate complex corrective surgical procedures, so that a surgeon can better anticipate intraoperative problems and determine intraoperative requirements. This paper describes the initial phase of the development of such an interactive surgical planning package. The scheme is currently being implemen... View full abstract»

The authors introduce a class of scan-line techniques that can be used to construct efficient algorithms for the generation of images and volume integrals from set-theoretic volume models. The approach is compared with existing methods via empirical results for two specific volume models. View full abstract»

This paper examines the origin and nature of the problem of contention for memory cycles, a problem that impacts the image-update performance of every raster graphics system. The author reviews the basic concepts of raster graphics systems, video timing, and semiconductor memories, and discusses typical architectures that use either available or announced parts. A typical CAD application has been implemented in two competing programming languages, Pascal and Prolog. The application chosen was a two-dimensional drafting system which is part of a project to develop a three-dimensional geometric modelling facility on a microcomputer. The results show the greater suitability of Prolog for such an application. View full abstract»
