    The background of power system restoration is analyzed and how this process might benefit from the use of knowledge-based systems is discussed. After describing the state of the art of knowledge-based systems for power system restoration, efforts are made to review knowledge-based techniques to handle system restoration problems.   • Intelligent alarm processing in power systems

    Concerns about the effectiveness of conventional alarm processing systems have prompted the development of expert systems designed to present a clearer description of disturbances to the power system operator. The features of the various intelligent alarm processors which are described in the technical literature are discussed in order to highlight the issues which must be addressed and the design decisions which must be made in the development of these systems. A number of systems described in the technical literature under the name intelligent alarm processor are in fact fault diagnosis systems.   • Coupling between knowledge-based and algorithmic methods

    The integration of knowledge-based techniques with traditional algorithmic software is discussed. Typical problems in power system planning and operation are better solved when the two techniques are combined. Functional aspects of a hybrid problem solving strategy are described and illustrated by two examples from power system operation. Available methods for practical implementation are reviewed. Sample applications from the literature are used to illustrate different approaches to hardware and software integration. Some of these applications have been successfully integrated with existing systems in operational environments. Future energy management systems based on an open architecture are likely to make it easier to integrate knowledge-based systems. Still, software integration issues continue to be a challenge. Particular problems are: automation of complex tasks by intelligent coordination, development of highly flexible software organizational schemes, and methods for easy data exchange between applications based on different software paradigms View full abstract»

  • Heuristic Scenario Builder for power system operator training

    The Heuristic Scenario Builder (HSB), a knowledge-based training scenario builder for the EPRI Operator Training Simulator (OTS), is described. Expert systems and heuristic searches are used in the HSB to find training scenarios that closely fit trainee profiles and that address particular training requirements. Expert knowledge obtained from instructors and other operations personnel is used throughout the HSB to determine the scenarios.   • Multiagent organizations for real-time operations

    The real-time operations of electric power networks are subject to two sets of forces. The first, including deregulation movements and growing environmental concerns, is acting to increase the complexity of operations. The second, including new computer technologies and emerging knowledge-based agents, provides some means for handling additional complexity. The authors argue that organizational changes will have to be made before the second set of forces can be applied to effectively counter the first. To make this argument, a framework for discussing organizational structures is presented. Then the structures of the two generations of computer-based, multiagent systems that have been developed for operations are reviewed. It is pointed out that these structures are well-suited to the algorithmic tasks involved in operations but not to the knowledge-based tasks.     Applying expert systems (ESs) to power system operation means embedding them in an existing environment which consists of computational facilities (SCADA, EMS) on one side, and the operating staff on the other side. An interface between process data and ES data is required to achieve this goal. For an unambiguous and clear information exchange with and good acceptance by the operators, an approximate natural language dialogue of the ES is desirable.
