  • A Negative Grid Triode Oscillator and Amplifier for Ultra-High Frequencies

A description is given of some negative grid triodes of unusual design which operate both as oscillators and as amplifiers at frequencies higher than those previously reported. These tubes differ from the conventional primarily in the number and arrangement of the leads. When used as oscillators the upper frequency limits are increased by this arrangement to approximately 1.3 times the values othe... View full abstract»

The phenomenon described in this paper is the occurrence of a very sudden change in ionization of a portion of the ionosphere. It manifests itself by the complete fading out of high-frequency radio transmission for a period of a few minutes to an hour or more, and by perturbations of terrestrial magnetism and earth currents. The effect was discovered in 1935, and found to occur simultaneously ever... View full abstract»

The results of daily observations at Riverhead, L.I., N.Y., since the middle of January, 1937, are reported. Some of the schedules of London and Berlin television transmissions are reported as being heard and measurements of field strengths are summarized. The vertical angle of arrival was measured, and by means of a reversible directive antenna it was determined that the signal at times arrives f... View full abstract»

  • A Transformation for Calculating the Constants of Vacuum Tubes with Cylindrical Elements

    Publication Year: 1937, Page(s):1300 - 1309

By the method of conjugate functions formulas are derived for the amplification constant of a relatively long tube structure comprising a small cylinder concentric with the axis of the structure, a number of wires parallel to the axis and located on a circle concentric with and outside the first cylinder, and a second cylinder also concentric with the axis and surrounding the wires. Several cases ... View full abstract»

  • Simple Method for Observing Current Amplitude and Phase Relations in Antenna Arrays

The paper describes a simple apparatus arrangement for observing the relative amplitudes and phases of the currents in the elements of a multi-element radiating system. The process of adjusting the array is greatly facilitated, much less time and skill being required than when each step in the process is checked by field intensity measurements. Using the method described, these measurements need o... View full abstract»

  • Radiation from Rhombic Antennas

A direct theoretical determination of the transmitting properties of the horizontal rhombic antenna and of the closely related inverted V structure has been made. Expressions are given for the intensity of the radiation, the polarization, the radiation resistance, and the gain. The intrinsic simplicity of the radiation distribution functions is revealed by graphical representation. Stereographic r... View full abstract»

Data on the ordinary-wave critical frequencies and virtual heights of the ionospheric layers are presented for the period indicated in the title. The monthly average values of the maximum usable frequencies for undisturbed days, for radio transmission by way of the regular layers is also provided. View full abstract»
