  • LAN interconnect using X.25 network services

    The use of X.25 for medium-speed applications (<56 kb/s) in personal computer local area networks (LANs) is considered, focusing on a number of popular LAN-based applications that are appropriately matched for X.25 services. For architectural reasons, they are broadly classified into two categories: PC-to-host access (terminal emulation), as in token ring, to synchronous data link control (SDLC) hosts using host gateways; and client-server applications, such as distributed databases that are bridged or routed. For each class of applications, the traffic characteristics are discussed, it is explained how an efficient interconnection can be accomplished, and some insight is provided into how LAN internetworking devices (routers and gateways) function in an X.25 environment.<> View full abstract»

    A comparison is made of the open shortest path first (OSPF) and intermediate system-to-intermediate system (IS-IS) routing protocols in terms of their ability to route internet protocol (IP) traffic. Common characteristics of the two protocols are briefly indicated. The differences between the two are explored with respect to packet encoding, area partitions, level 2 partitions, injection of level 2 information, authentication, designated router election, link state packet propagation, synchronized parameter setting, and neighbor initialization.<> View full abstract»

    The bridging and routing of IEEE 802 and fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) local area network (LAN) switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) are invested for both intraenterprise and interenterprise networking. Bridging and routing as mechanisms for the interconnection of LAN end stations are explained, and SMDS is characterized.   • SNMP agent support for SMDS

    A description is given of the model for the switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent to be deployed in the networks of the Bell operating companies, their successors, or regional affiliates to provide customer network management (CNM) services and the CNM information that customers of SMDS may access. Examples of how this information, acquired through the use of SNMP, may be applied by network administrators of large internetworks that employ the SMDS network are given. The examples, which are the results of experiments conducted on laboratory equipment, demonstrate that the SNMP management framework can be applied equally well over wide-area network services and over local area networks. Thus, SNMP in public data network services appears to be a viable and practical near-term solution for CNM.<> View full abstract»

    Some network management mechanisms for TCP/IP router-based networks are outlined, and the traffic management activities offered in support of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation Network (CICNet) are examined. An overview is given of CICNet, and its topology and network operations activities are described. The traffic engineering and management system developed at AT&T Bell Laboratories for the support of TCP/IP-based LAN interconnection networks is then described in detail.
