The radar cross sections of both small and large ships for high-frequency surface-wave radar (HFSWR) were studied by using the numerical electromagnetics code, and by using measurements from an HFSWR system at Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada. The results of the study indicated that Teleost, a 2405-ton Canadian Coast Guard ship, and large cargo container vessels (-36000 ton) have comparable RCS val... View full abstract»

The system design of telescopes is usually dominated by the aspects of the optics and receiving instruments. The telescope structure, mechanism, and control are "only" aids to position these elements toward the celestial target, but their quality has a big impact on the final performance. This paper describes an integrated design approach to these "mechatronic" telescope subsystems. View full abstract»

Design and implementation of new feed systems for two Russian-built skirted Franklin vertical antennas near Kabul, Afghanistan, were accomplished using moment method techniques. To facilitate re-tuning to new operating frequencies, the original stub-tuned matching network was replaced with a conventional "T" network. The proper settings of the terminating stubs on the lower skirts in order to obta... View full abstract»

Infrared camera images are used to calculate the power deposited on a target by a millimeter wave source. Thin carbon-impregnated sheets of Kapton are illuminated with RF energy, and then infrared images in the 3-5 μm band provide temperature data that is used to numerically solve the heat equation and obtain absorbed power values. Techniques to determine the electrical properties of Kapto... View full abstract»

  • An approach to define parameters for localization of thunderstorms

    Publication Year: 2006 , Page(s): 48 - 54

The basic topic of this paper is the localization of the thunderstorm center. It concentrates on the development of a method to analytically determine the range, the geometric factor, and the angular parameters. An electrical dipole of arbitrary spatial orientation is used as model of the discharge between a cloud and the Earth. View full abstract»

In a recent invited paper in the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, some of the challenging problems in computational electromagnetics were presented. One of the objectives of this note is to simply point out that challenging to one may be simple to another. This is demonstrated through an example cited in that article. The example chosen is a Vivaldi antenna array. What we discuss here also ... View full abstract»

The current paper proposes a new, simple, methodical approach to broadband microstrip antenna design. The approach relies on a reformulation of the antenna-design problem as an impedance-matching problem, in which the antenna is considered to be the matching device required to match the feed line to air. Thus, impedance-matching techniques, such as Chebyshev transformers and a Klopfenstein taper, ... View full abstract»
