It is explained that to simulate circuits containing negative inductances and capacitances using general-purpose simulators like SPICE, the networks under consideration must be transformed into suitable SPICE-compatible circuits. Criteria that the portion of the network containing the negative elements should meet are given. The SPICE network realizing these elements, when L and C are independent ... View full abstract»

The operation of fiber-based sensors is explained and the two types (intensity-based and phase-based) are examined in detail. Research directed toward the use of fiber-optic interferometric sensors for underwater acoustic sensing is discussed. Developments in fiber-optic magnetic sensors, flow measurement, and gyroscopes are described.<> View full abstract»

Significant differences between microsensors and micromechanisms, on the one hand, and integrated circuits, on the other, are examined from the design viewpoint. Microelectronic sensors, micromachining processes, and micromechanisms and micro-actuators are discussed. The principal technological forces driving microsensor development, namely lithography and planar technology, are considered, and so... View full abstract»

  • High-T/sub c/ superconductivity seeks a digital home

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):29 - 32
Request permission for commercial reuse | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (483 KB)

Two obvious applications of high-T/sub c/ superconductors are discussed: the use of Josephson technology at 77 K and the use of high-T/sub c/ lines for interconnects. The difficulties that must be addressed for each of these is discussed, and the prospects for overcoming them are assessed. The need to achieve full compatibility with polymers is stressed.<> View full abstract»
