In this paper, two-dimensional stochastic linear models are used in developing algorithms for image analysis such as classification, segmentation, and object detection in images characterized by textured backgrounds. These models generate two-dimensional random processes as outputs to which statistical inference procedures can naturally be applied. A common thread throughout our algorithms is the ... A review of the subject of radioactive waste management is provided, including background information, tutorial material, and a status report on U.S. disposal efforts. Topics discussed are: the radioactive decay process; the steps in the nuclear fuel cycle from the mining of uranium to the disposal of wastes; typical uses of isotopes and radiation in which there are waste byproducts; classificatio... When two or more frequency-modulated and/or digital carriers of various sizes and modulation formats are transmitted through a common memoryless nonlinear device with AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics such as a traveling-wave tube amplifier, interactions among the carriers will occur. One of the impairments caused by these interactions results in modulation-transfer noise effects. In particular, in ... View full abstract»

An iterative nonlinear algorithm for microwave image reconstruction based on moment method solutions to field problems has been suggested. The algorithm has been simplified significantly considering the effects due to the dominant nonlinear terms only. The results obtained using it have been compared with those reported earlier using a simpler algorithm. View full abstract»

Although the magnitude of the discrete Fourier transform of a maximal-length shift-register sequence is flat, except for its value at zero frequency, the higher resolution spectral content given by the Fourier-series transform is highly erratic. This little-known fact is described, and its ramifications on fast Fourier transforms of one-digit-extended pseudo noise and zero-padded pseudo noise are ... View full abstract»

Mosely and Humblet have obtained an efficient Contention Resolution Algorithm for transmission scheduling in a multi-user collision channel with ternary feedback (idle, success, collision). In this letter, a recursion for the expected value of the algorithm cycle delay is shown to reduce the computation of the efficiency and optimum partition functions to a simple optimization problem. • On reducing computational complexity in connected digit recognition by the frame labeling method

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):614 - 616

A typical connected digit recognition system employs dynamic programming (DP) for pattern matching. In order to reduce the computational burden of DP, we propose a frame-labeling-based data reduction technique. This approach can not only reduce input data significantly, but also provide the estimated number of digits and a sequence of candidate digits in a string for dynamic programming. The amplitude of high-frequency square-wave dither necessary to quench limit cycles in a class of relay control systems is shown to be less than the amplitude required with any other periodic, odd, half-wave symmetric, high-frequency dither signal A general expression for the minimum dither amplitude is also given. An algorithm for obtaining a state-space (Markovian) model of a random process from a finite number of estimated covariance lags is presented and compared to other SVD-based methods. The new algorithm performs well for small data sets in which the estimated covariance sequence is perturbed by estimation errors, and may not even be positive definite. Simulation results are presented for a second-or... View full abstract»
