1/f noise is a nonstationary random process suitable for modeling evolutionary or developmental systems. It combines the strong influence of past events on the future and, hence somewhat predictable behavior, with the influence of random events. Nonstationary autocorrelation functions for 1/f noise are developed to demonstrate that its present behavior is equally correlated with both the recent an... View full abstract»

Using the Lagrangian approach, a time-domain analysis of wave propagation in an inhomogeneous lossy medium is described. We consider a half-space problem (x ≥ 0) in which the medium is plane stratified in the direction of propagation and can be modeled by a piecewise uniform lossy transmission line. A method of profile inversion which is based directly upon quantities measured in time at the... View full abstract»

Multiplication effects in point processes are important in a number of areas of electrical engineering and physics. We examine the properties and applications of a point process that arises when each event of a primary Poisson process generates a random number of subsidiary events, with a given time course. The multiplication factor is assumed to obey the Poisson probability law, and the dynamics ... View full abstract»

This review of array antennas highlights those elements of theory and hardware that are a part of the present rapid technological growth. The growth and change in array antennas include increased emphasis on "special-purpose" array techniques such as conformal and printed circuit arrays, wide angle scanning arrays, techniques for limited sector coverage, and antennas with dramatically increased pa... The one-dimensional inverse scattering problem can be solved in principal by use of the Gel'fand-Levitan integral equation. However, explicit solutions of this equation are seldom easy to obtain. Here we develop an iterative numeric procedure to reconstruct arbitrary smooth dielectric profiles. Several cases exemplify the simplicity and economy of the technique. View full abstract»

It is shown that an adaptive multi-input, multi-output space-time processor (beamformer and filter) consists of a multi-input, multi-output adaptive processor and a nonadaptive beamsteering operator. The adaptive processor is determined by the spatial and temporal properties of the noise field; whereas, the beamsteering operator is determined a priori by the desired beamsteering directions.
