The technology of solid-state adjustable speed ac drives was launched in the 1960's. Since then many innovations in devices, circuits, control theory, and signal electronics have made a considerable contribution to this technology. With the heritage of past experience, and the projection of present trends, an almost certain prediction can be made that adjustable speed ac drives will find widesprea... View full abstract»

Although a variety of so-called psychic phenomena have attracted man's attention throughout recorded history, organized scholarly effort to comprehend such effects is just one century old, and systematic academic research roughly half that age. Over recent years, a sizeable spectrum of evidence has been brought forth from reputable laboratories in several disciplines to suggest that at times human... View full abstract»

This paper is a tutorial and a survey of analytical methods in the evaluation of data communication networks. The major mathematical methods are Markov chains applied to discrete time systems and queueing theory. Emphasis is placed on the applications of the mathematical tools. The discussion follows the framework of the layered architecture. In the section on data link control, rigorous as well a... View full abstract»

  • Reducible polynomials in more than one variable

Polynomials in more than one variable arise frequently in multidimensional signal processing applications. Unlike polynomials in a single variable, multidimensional polynomials cannot, in general, be factored. In this note, it is shown that the set of factorable multi-dimensional polynomials is extremely small in the sense that almost all polynomials in two or more variables are irreducible. It is shown in this correspondence that the system function H(z) of a linear time invariant (LTI) causal digital filter with real impulse response coefficients can be obtained from the real part of its frequency response HR(e) given in the form of a rational trigonomentric function, using algebraic methods rather than complex contour integration techniques. Roytman and Swamy have used the properties of orthonormal excitations to establish one method of circuit diagnosis. In this letter the method is extended to determine the driving-point or Thevenin equivalent impedance for each node pair. View full abstract»

The circuit configuration of the DPLL described in this paper is a modified version of the DPLL recently reported by the authors. Fast and symmetrical tracking has been achieved by the modified DPLL retaining the original properties of wide locking range and low frequency capability as an FM discriminator and frequency multiplier. Also, it is operable in a number of modes defined by their phases (... View full abstract»

The Brambilla grill, used for feeding microwave power into some fusion devices, has been reported to have problems with multipactor. A possible solution is offered, based on observation of multipactor in the output waveguide of a large Klystron, and its suppression when the waveguide is distorted. View full abstract»
