This paper summarizes the results of two extensive literature reviews on the biological effects of electric fields from EHV transmission lines. While considerable data exist on this subject major problems were found in much of the literature. It was found that electric field induces about the same body cuirent into humans as that experienced by individuals touching household appliances. As a conse... View full abstract»

The scattering of waves from periodic surfaces is studied. We give a general review of this problem and compare three analytical methods for a conducting sinusoidal surface in detail for both TE and TM polarized waves. The three methods are: 1) the method developed by Masel, Merrill, and Miller (MMM); 2) the Modified Physical Optics (MPO) method; and 3) Waterman's Plane Harmonics (WPH) approach. W... A transmission rate of ≃1 Tbits/sec (≃0.1 Tbits/s) per 30 km can be achieved using envelope solitons with peak power of ≃10 W (≃10 mW) in a monomode optical fiber, respectively. Unlike the linear pulse in which the bit rate is limited by the group dispersion, the bit rate of soliton transmission is limited by the fiber loss and the input power. Conditions for achieving opti... View full abstract»

The adaptive recursive filter design first proposed by White [1] is re-examined, and a modified filter configuration is proposed which drastically simplifies the gradient generating mechanism. The performance behavior of the simplified filter design is analyzed. View full abstract»

A simple digital trigger scheme to generate equidistant firing pulses by using 1-φ sensing, for triggering 3-φ thyristor converters is presented. The scheme explained can take data directly from the CPU of a microprocessor. The correction of firing angle takes place within 1/6th of the input period. The experimental results obtained with 8 bits of operation are presented. View full abstract»

Adaptive prediction was applied to the problem of detecting small seismic events in microseismic background noise. The Widrow-Hoff LMS adaptive filter [1], [2] used in a prediction configuration is compared with two standard seismic filters as an onset indicator. Examples demonstrate the technique's usefulness with both synthetic and actual seismic data. View full abstract»
