This tutorial-survey paper introduces the problems of decentralized statistical decision making (team theory) where the decision makers have access to different information concerning the underlying uncertainties. Using a simple thematic example with variations, the paper introduces and explains various concepts and results of team theory as applied to economics, information theory, and decentrali... Recent nonlinear "superresolution" techniques reported in the field of spectral analysis are of great interest in other fields as well, including radio-frequency (RF) adaptive array antenna systems. This paper is primarily a "cross-fertilization" treatise which takes the two most popular nonlinear techniques, the Burg maximum entropy method and the maximum likelihood method, and relates them to th... The refractive index distribution in the core of a multimode optical-fiber waveguide plays an important role in determining the transmission properties of the guide. The closer the index profile is to the required ideal distribution, the greater the resulting information carrying capacity of the fiber. This review paper discusses methods for measuring the refractive index distribution in optical f... View full abstract»

Current trends in research and development of components for optical communication are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on active components for fiber-optic systems which have undergone recent major advances. Basic properties of optical fibers and recent technological improvements in splices, connectors, and source/detector-fiber couplers are presented first. This background information serves as a ba... It is shown through an example that solutions of differential equations obtained from a network do not satisfy network constraints. A general discussion is provided which demonstrates that state equations in terms of charges and fluxes offer a better representation of the network. View full abstract»

  • Frequency transformations for two-dimensional recursive digital filters

    Publication Year: 1980 , Page(s): 735 - 737
Save to Project icon | Request Permissions | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (296 KB)

This letter discusses frequency transformations for two-dimensional recursive digital filters. It is shown that a stable transformation g(z1-1, z2-1) can be obtained directly from a two-variable reactance function in a simple manner via the double bilinear z-transform (zi- 1)/(zi+ 1), i = 1, 2. An expression for the Jacobian of the roots of a polynomial is first established and its usefulness in determining the displacements of poles or zeros of a linear system is shown. An example of a digital filter is considered. View full abstract»

Existing single-loop feedback methods of linearization do not consider the conflicting aspect of linearity and longer lifetime of the LED's. In this correspondence, a multiple-loop feedback system is proposed in which the biasing current of the LED is as low as 2 mA. This multiple-loop arrangement has the property of zero-sensitivity system and the system gain is independent of the parameters of t... View full abstract»

Class-D voltage-switching tuned power amplifier circuits are presented, in which complementary pair transistors are used and bases of the transistors are coupled by a capacitor. These circuits have several advantages over previous circuits. They do not require a drive transformer and both transistors can be mounted on one heat sink. View full abstract»

A novel scheme using two internally compensated operational amplifiers with unmatched gain-bandwidth products is suggested as a replacement for the conventional single-amplifier integrators, inverters or summers. The scheme, while providing exact phase compensation, contributes to magnitude compensation as well. Filters realized using such a scheme have an extended range of frequency of operation ... This communication discusses mathematical systems which are found to be appropriate for the electronic implementation of simplified (and of a relatively cheaper realization) oscillator models for generating sine waves in quadrature. It is shown that in spite of the simplification, the operation of the oscillators as VCO's is expected not to be degraded and the amplitudes stay precisely stabilized. View full abstract»

The second-harmonic generation efficiency in II-VI compound semiconductors at 77 K under high-field condition has been calculated using a nonlinear analytical approximation for the velocity-field characteristics. It is found that the harmonic generation efficiencies are considerably higher than the corresponding values for elemental semiconductors. View full abstract»

A technique to spectrally separate the sidebands in amplitude and narrow-band frequency modulation is presented. With this technique, the upper and lower sidebands can be right and left shifted respectively by an arbitrary amount and thus either sideband can be selected by a bandpass filter.
