Computer-controlled digital music synthesis will profoundly affect popular music in the next decade. This paper gives a brief historical account of music synthesis. The most important aspects of digital synthesis are described and compared with analog techniques. One way of achieving a practical digital musical instrument using currently available technology is presented. Both hardware and softwar... View full abstract»

This paper addresses the theory, design, and applications of surface acoustic wave (SAW) Fourier-transform processors. These analog processors are shown to perform several sophisticated real-time signal-processing functions at wide bandwidth (tens of megahertz) making them attractive for use in radar, sonar, and communication equipments. Theoretical results show how specific arrangements of physic... View full abstract»

Based on a study of the extensive literature in handprint recognition, this paper presents a survey in this challenging field. Recognition algorithms, data bases, character models, and handprint standards are examined. Achievements in the recognition of handprinted numerals, alphanumerics, Fortran, and Katakana characters are analyzed and compared. Data quality and constraints, as well as human an... The design of speech coders that produce high-quality highly intelligible speech at 6 to 16 kb/s while retaining robustness to background and transmission impairments is an area of current research interest. Differential encoding structures employing adaptive quantization and adaptive prediction constitute one of the most promising approaches to achieving these design objectives. This paper focuse... • Dispersion equations in moving media

The derivation of dispersion equations for electromagnetic waves in moving media is considered. Absorption is included. It becomes clear that conduction current or polarization current models lead to identical dispersion equations in moving media. The invariance of dispersion equations is defined and discussed. The question of velocity induced wave modes in moving media is considered, and conditio... View full abstract»

  • A high-speed low-cost modulo Pimultiplier with RNS arithmetic applications

Modulo Pimultipliers are implemented by look-up tables when Piis small (5 bits or less) and by index calculus if Piis larger (6 bits or more). However, index calculus only works for prime moduli Pi. In this letter, we introduce a new square-law multiplier that is useful for modulo Pimultiplication where Piis any modulus. It is expec... • The concept of the phase of a linear n-port and a general dynamical system

The paper outlines the concept of the "energy phase" of a linear passive n-port and of an accretive operator representing any linear Hilbert input-output system. Three definitions for "phase angle" are proposed, interrelated, and interpreted. View full abstract»

A synthesis procedure for generating second-order active filters using the operational amplifier pole and a single external capacitor is given. The proposed method is based on drawing the signal-flow graph from the given transfer function and obtaining the circuit realization from the graph. View full abstract»

  • An active-compensated double-integrator filter without matched operational amplifiers

All active-compensated double-integrator filters proposed up to now require matched operational amplifiers. This condition is never fully met in practice, resulting in a Q-error that can be large at high-Q and high pole frequencies. A superior double-integrator filter is presented here, which does not require matched operational amplifiers to give error-free Q even under extreme conditions. View full abstract»

  • Gabor's expansion of a signal into Gaussian elementary signals

It is proved that Gabor's expansion of a signal into a discrete set of Gaussian elementary signals exists. An expansion into another discrete set of functions is defined, which functions are biorthonormal, to the Gaussian elementary signals. Hence, the expansion coefficients of the two expansions can be determined easily. View full abstract»
