In recent years, Computer Aided Tomography (CAT) has had a major impact on the medical fields of radiology and neurology and nuclear medicine. This paper introduces the basic physics and mathematics underlying the production of reconstructed tomographic images. It discusses the evolution and philosophies of different possible data collection and reconstruction schemes. View full abstract»

On the basis of the Minkowski formulation, this paper discusses the basic laws governing the small-signal fields propagated along an electron beam which is rotating around its axis with constant angular frequency of rotation and drifting in the axial direction at constant relativistic velocity. In the first preliminary section are described the dc conditions for getting a stable relativistic elect... View full abstract»

Active optical systems are those in which real-time control over optical wavefronts is employed to optimize system perference in the presence of random distrurbances. Applications include 1) outgoingwave systems for maximizing the power density of a laser beam on a target and 2) received-wave systems for maximizing the angular resolving power of a telescope viewing a distant object through a turbu... The plane-wave reflection and transmission coefficients of a dielectric slab having a sinusoidal variation of its permittivity are deduced from the solution of the full electromagnetic boundary-value problem and compared with the results of the approximate procedure based on the coupled-mode equations for the slowly varying amplitudes. A hybrid digital filter structure is presented that combines a combinatorial multiplication technique with a residue number architecture. The hybrid technique eliminates general multiplication and results in a parallel structure inherent in the residue number system. Results indicate that better speed/cost ratios can be obtained with the hybrid architecture than with either structure alone for app... View full abstract»

  • Growth and damping of solitons in a nonlinear transmission line with moving parameters

    Publication Year: 1978, Page(s):702 - 703
Request permission for commercial reuse | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (222 KB)

A nonlinear dispersive inhomogeneous transmission line in which solitons grow or reduce their amplitudes exponentially without emitting any oscillatory tails is derived. In the one-directional approximation, the wave equation shown here can be still rewritten, through an explicit transformation, to the well-known Korteweg-de Vries equation which has a multiple interacting soliton solution. A generalization of the transitional Butterworth-Chebyshev filter is presented. Using this method, at least ten different types of transitional filters can be obtained. View full abstract»

An easily integrable precision floating current-controlled negative impedance converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, The resulting converted negative impedance magnitude is both highly accurate and linear over the entire dynamic range. Either terminal voltage can be referenced. The circuit is stable for capacitive impedance convenions. View full abstract»

A novel solid-state microwave transmitter which is capable of high-speed digital modulation at high RF power levels, and yet is a simple single-stage design, has been realized. This has been accomplished by illuminating a TRAPATT diode with a stream of optical pulses from a GaAlAs laser diode. View full abstract»

The incorporation of a heterodyne detection unit in a recently developed interferometric bridge operating at x-band permits the use of this instrument to sense complicated vibratory phenomena of a relatively wide bandwidth. The interferometer detected output is a direct replica of the translations of the experimental vibrating objects. View full abstract»

  • Noise reduction of second-harmonic-type magnetic modulators by increased driving amplitude and frequency

To reduce the noise level in the magnetic modulator the relation between driving condition and equivalent input noise level is investigated experimentally. It is confirmed that both the increases in amplitude and in frequency of the drive lower the noise level; consequently, the noise level of 0.98 µA/m/√Hz is achieved. View full abstract»
