    The steps performed by logic synthesis software, which transforms a specification of a function and its timing into an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) such as a gate or standard cell array, programmable logic device (PLD), or field programmable gate array (FPGA), are outlined.     Software tools for simulating and analyzing electromagnetic (EM) fields are described, with particular reference to integrated circuits (ICs). The use of a three-tiered approach for large-scale design is discussed, and a different tool is needed at each level. The most prudent approach today is to solve small pieces of a large problem and use a linear circuit simulator to combine the S-parameter files from the subnetworks. Highlights of new packages are faster data capture, extended computationally-intensive analyses, and better visualization. Major upgrades of a number of PC packages and the role of the workstation as the pacesetter of the marketplace are noted. Data acquisition for DSP boards and the increased use of icons are addressed.     Tools for designing systems around digital signal processor (DSP) chips are discussed. These tools accelerate the design and development of systems with embedded DSPs and can also reduce development costs by letting the engineer focus on a specific application rather than the myriad details of the programming task itself. While a developmental program is running, designers can use higher-level tools-debuggers, simulators, and emulators-to help provide insight into the program's execution and flaws.
