The review considers various examples of the interactions between glass science and technology on the one hand and electrical and electronic engineering on the other. The historical introduction leads up to the development of special glasses, mainly to meet the needs of lens designers, at the end of the nineteenth century. An elementary account is given of glass formation, of the structure of glas... View full abstract»

The author gives a survey of the significant developments in the science of electrostatic precipitation since 1970, with special reference to electrical characteristics. The review specifically identifies the main physical processes that take place and the relevant fundamental equations and relationships. Reference is made to electric and current fields, voltage-current relationships, collection t... View full abstract»

  • Symmetry of electromagnetism

    Publication Year: 1988, Page(s):363 - 368
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (329 KB)

The author shows that the two systems of electricity and magnetism are inherently symmetrical. The introduction of relativistic 4-vectors and tensors extends this symmetry into a form which is easily exploited to unify the approach to static and dynamic problems in any curvilinear co-ordinate system.<> View full abstract»

  • Finite element method for 3D eddy current flow in thin conducting sheets

IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (405 KB)

A finite element method for modelling power frequency three-dimensional eddy current distributions in thin-sheet conductors is introduced. The thin sheets may be of arbitrary shape and spatially varying in thickness and conductivity, but must be thin compared to the skin depth of the material at the excitation frequency. A symmetric sparse set of equations is obtained and solved using the precondi... View full abstract»

  • Review of physical diagnostic techniques in medicine and biology: technical progress and future requirements

    Publication Year: 1988, Page(s):375 - 384
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1414 KB)

The author aims to introduce the reader to the wide array of diagnostic devices, based on physical processes, and also to indicate aspects which require further technical development or even a new approach to design and construction. Technological progress has led to the availability in developed countries of many diagnostic techniques, e.g. X-ray and NMR imaging, positron emission imaging, thermo... View full abstract»

Describes a new probe for the measurement of power flow from a source of supply to a load which is characterised by having an extremely low power factor. Power is measured by sensing the electric and magnetic fields in a defined region between the source and the load. A co-axial configuration is chosen to simplify the integration of the Poynting vector that represents the rate of flow of electroma... View full abstract»

The main features of systems theory are presented. The systems approach comprises a body of concepts for the description, analysis and design of complex entities. It embraces the engineering of control, computing systems, biological organisms, human organisation and economics. The generalised theory has the feature of holism, 'the whole is greater than the sum of its parts'. Complex entities are d... View full abstract»

IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (826 KB)

The author identifies the important area of creativity in the design process as least amenable to definition, being comprised of seminal ideas which must fall into a fertile ground of expert domain knowledge coupled with a progressive management environment. Creativity is presented as an essential element in design which can be taught and encouraged. Creative design 'seeds' for decision-based syst... View full abstract»
