The properties of the stereovectorelectrocardiography (SVEC) III vectorcardiographic (VCG) lead system designed by Schmitt and Simonson are described. The theoretical and clinical aspects of this system are compared with the two other widely applied systems, of Frank and McFee. The theory and short history of VCG recording are also discussed. This work recounts the author's experiences with Otto Schmitt, and the Archeus Project (AP), an organization that discusses matters relating to human potential, with members coming from the local business, medical, and technological communities. The AP membership met monthly and eight or nine invited lectures were given at those meetings, as well as occasional talks by one of the AP members. Topic... View full abstract»

During stereovectorelectrocardiographic (SVEC) measurements, respiration influences the cardiac vector. This cardiac vector is modulated by the change in the heart position due to diaphragm movement, changes in conductivity in thoracic tissues caused by lung inflation, and shifts in the blood volume. For years, the only method to control the respiratory induced variation was for subject or patient... View full abstract»

Otto Schmitt was a prolific intellectual creator with over 60 patents and more than 300 scientific and technical publications produced during his lifespan. In addition, he left an enormous amount of manuscripts, letters, and equipment of different types. The objective here is to give an overview of his published production trying to separate out and group the many subjects he dealt with assessing ... View full abstract»

This work recounts the life of Otto Herbert Schmitt who is most widely known as the inventor of the Schmitt trigger, which he developed as a graduate student in the mid-1930s. Schmitt remained an active scientist, engineer, and intellectual until the mid-1990s - six decades that brimmed with energy, effort, and insights. Viewing his life in full context suggests that the Schmitt trigger was a mere... View full abstract»

Senior capstone design courses provide students the opportunity to develop their design skills and learn about the product development process. Student project teams, a number of which are industry-sponsored, often develop creative design solutions that result in the creation of intellectual property. When this occurs, who owns the intellectual property: the student, faculty advisors, industry spo... View full abstract»

Inspired by BLAST and related sequence comparison algorithms, we have developed a method for the direct comparison of query text against database text as an improvement upon traditional keyword-based searches. The primary application of our implementation, eTBLAST, is to better select those database entries (abstracts, in the case of MEDLlNE) of most relevance to a given query. eTBLAST takes as in...
