This paper presents achievements and contributions of William D. Coolidge in the field of electrotechnology. Coolidge discovered a new method of producing ductile tungsten by a combination of reducing impurities and carefully controlled mechanical working. He also became known for his contribution to the development of improved X-ray tube and vacuum tube electronics. During the first world war, he... View full abstract»

This article describes the vulnerability of variable speed drives (VSD) to voltage sags on a theoretical basis. Then, three embedded mitigation methods are addressed in theory which protect textile processes against voltage sags, and practical measurements with a sag generator are shown. The use of embedded solutions such as kinetic buffering and boost convertor or an active front end will increas... View full abstract»

This paper presents very expensive impulse testing (also called surge testing) and turn insulation deterioration in electric motors. The tests include multiple start and stops under normal line conditions. The stresses introduced into the winding during startup and stopping process were two-fold. These stresses were the cause of the shorted turn-turn. The insulation failure mechanisms, fundamental... View full abstract»

In the past, the decision whether to repair or replace an electric motor has been one of economics. Replacement of an older electric motor with a more efficient model often makes sense for a motor operating continuously. However, in most cases, the decision is more complex. The purpose of this article is to explore both the choices and present some of the many options available. An application che... View full abstract»

This article explores tests available for various induction motors and analyzes the stress on the motor and value of information derived. When considering motor testing, we need to discuss both in-process testing and testing of the final product. The in-process testing focuses on stator and rotor assembly, although the integrity of other motor components can also be examined. The benefit of having... View full abstract»

This paper presents electrical equipment maintenance by condition-based maintenance (CBM). In the CBM approach, equipment maintenance based on a routine schedule can be replaced with an approach based on system wellness diagnostics. This approach might rely on noninvasive monitoring of three-phase induction motors to report equipment condition and enable maintenance intervention before a failure o... View full abstract»

This paper presents partial-discharge (PD) analysis as a tool for predictive maintenance for medium-voltage switchgear systems. PD analysis is the newest technology being applied to MV electrical equipment and can detect corona or surface tracking behind metal barriers. This online PD monitoring proved that the equipment was properly assembled, had good cable termination by electrical contractor, ... View full abstract»
