  • Silencing voice recognition technology

    This article explains about the voice recognition software that interprets what we are going to say even before we say it. NASA scientists have had an early success in developing a prototype technology that recognizes and processes silent speech for use with a PC. Instead of grabbing words from spoken sounds, the technology grabs words from nerve signals the human brain sends to the throat and tongue. Stick-on sensors are used to intercept the brain signals.     The Hudson Valley transportation management center has begun permanent operations in a new state-of-the-art facility in Hawthorne, New York. Having the NYSP as a key partner in the Hudson Valley, TMC bridges the gap between theory and reality. NYSP personnel are specially trained in incident and emergency management. Maintaining an evenly balanced partnership ensures that engineering and enforcement expertise combine to produce powerful, effective management plans that use the best of both viewpoints. With the key stakeholders in place, the next requirements were a high-performance, reliable communications and information management network and a fault-tolerant advanced transportation management system and this led to the development of the Hudson Valley.   • The Mars exploration rovers descent image motion estimation system

    Descent image motion estimation system is the first machine-vision system for estimating lander velocity during planetary descent. Composed of sensors and software, DIMES features a descent imager, a radar altimeter, an inertial-measurement unit, and an algorithm for combining sensor measurements to estimate horizontal velocity - the speed across the planet's surface the lander travels as it descends. Although the sensors are not novel technology, the algorithm and flight software that combines them are new. This algorithm combines radar, image, and inertial data in a novel way to create a low-cost, robust, and computationally efficient solution to the horizontal-velocity-estimation problem.   • Combining information extraction with genetic algorithms for text mining

    An evolutionary approach that combines information extraction technology and genetic algorithms can produce a new, integrated model for text mining. Text mining discovers unseen patterns in textual databases. We've brought together the benefits of GAs for data mining and IE technology to propose a new approach for high-level knowledge discovery. Unlike previous KDT approaches, our model doesn't rely on external resources or conceptual descriptions. Instead, it performs the discovery using only information from the original corpus of text documents and from training data computed from them. The GA that produces the hypotheses is strongly guided by semantic constraints, which means that several specifically defined metrics evaluate the quality and plausibility. View full abstract»

    This thesaurus-based search system uses automatic indexing, RDF-based querying, and concept-based visualization of results to support exploration of large online document repositories. Innovative research institutes rely on the availability of complete and accurate information about new research and development. Information providers such as Elsevier make it their business to provide the required information in a cost-effective way. The semantic Web will likely contribute significantly to this effort because it facilitates access to an unprecedented quantity of data.     This article extends and implements the basic conceptual framework SEAL (semantic portal) with the aim of using semantic technologies in real-world scenarios through a reliable, scalable infrastructure. We also show how multiple semantic portals can interact with one another to exchange knowledge, thus fostering reuse. The building blocks of our extension include knowledge integration, processing, representation, organization, and access.     SECO (semantic collaboration), an infrastructure that lets agents uniformly access data that is potentially scattered across the Web is described. The SECO system provides mediation services that aggregate, integrate, and display RDF data obtained from the semantic Web. Using a crawler, SECO collects the RDF data available in files and uses RDF repositories as data sources.     Building Finder uses semantic Web technologies to integrate different data types from various online data sources. The application's use of the RDF and RDF data query language makes it usable by computer agents as well as human users. An agent would send a query, expressed in terms of its preferred ontology (schema), to a system that would then find and integrate the relevant data from multiple sources and return it using the agent's ontology.     Certain features of tasks make especially difficult for humans. These constitute leverage points for applying intelligent technologies, but there's a flip side. Designing complex cognitive systems is itself a tough task. Cognitive engineers face the same challenges in designing systems that users confront in working the tasks that the systems are intended to aid. We discuss about these issues. We assume that the cognitive engineers will invoke one or more knowledge shields when they are confronted with evidence that their understanding and planning involves a reductive understanding. The knowledge shield phenomenon suggests that it will take effort to change the reductive mindset that people might bring to design a CCS. View full abstract»
