    The aim of this article is twofold. First, we give a brief historical and forward-looking overview of conventional and SSL lighting technologies. We focus on SSL technology based on inorganic light-emitting diodes (SSL-LEDs), rather than that based on organic light-emitting diodes (SSL-OLEDs), as SSL-LED technology is more advanced and more likely to be first to enter general illumination applications. Second, we describe some of the simplest but most important lamp, chip, and materials design choices that will need to be made. We especially focus on the constraints imposed on those design choices if SSL-LED technology is to fulfill its promise for general illumination. View full abstract»

    Working within the application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) industry, time to market is very important. With very deep submicron (VDSM) processes, issues with timing enclosure, cell placement efficiency, the antenna effect, signal integrity, etc., have impacted our ability to meet market requirements in a timely manner. By focusing on the design process, two of the major issues, the antenna problem and cell placement efficiency, can be addressed.     This article suggests that as we consider the social and ethical dimensions of nanotechnology development; inclusion of analyses of the role of human cognition is essential. Cognition is formed from sensory-motor experiences, beliefs, ambitions, and ideas; scientific research and technological development are expressive of these elements of cognition, ultimately in the technological goods we use and consume. By understanding the role of imagination, which is imbedded in the cognitive process, we will be better equipped to glean the meaning of the development of nanotechnology and to direct that development toward conscientious and humanitarian ends.
