The nature of parallel processing and the operation of high-speed parallel computing structures highly suited for implementation in VLSI are explained. As an example, a systolic array configuration for matrix vector multiplication is considered. Practical implementation issues that need to be resolved are discussed. These concern solving problems larger than array size, mapping of algorithms to ar... View full abstract»

The potential benefits of microelectromechanical systems are discussed. The problems that must be resolved in designing such systems are examined. The wobble motor is used to illustrate how innovative design can overcome some of the problems posed. Torque-speed measurements on wobble motors are described, and some potential applications are indicated.<> View full abstract»

For pt.III (word processing) see ibid., vol.9, no.3, p.49-51 (Oct. 1990). Public-domain and shareware application programs useful in an academic setting, with emphasis on electrical engineering course-work requirements, are discussed. Two packages were judged to meet the criteria for student use: EDRAW and PC-KEY-DRAW. These specialized packages can make it easy to sketch arbitrary diagrams, symbo... View full abstract»

  • Land mobile digital communication-how do you spell success?

    Publication Year: 1991, Page(s):29 - 31
Request permission for commercial reuse | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (350 KB)

The factors that determine the probability of successful mobile communication, assuming an ideal system, are examined. Measures of successful message reception are explained. The problem of determining, for real-world radio communications operating at threshold conditions, the system relationships between the input and output signal-to-noise ratios for classic receiving systems is addressed.<...
