The W. M. Keck Observatory and Telescope are presently under construction on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. When completed in 1990, the telescope will be the world's largest instrument for astronomical observations at visible and infrared wavelengths. The primary mirror has a diameter of 10 m and consists of a mosaic of 36 hexagonal segments, with the orientation of each segment actively controlled. This pape... View full abstract»

Two expert systems are used to monitor two industrial processes, looking for problems. The processes are an adipic acid reactor and a heat exchanger. When a problem occurs, the process operator is alerted and is told the problem and its probable cause. Expert systems have also been used to tune proportional-integral-derivative controllers and to help select flow meters to suit customer requirement... View full abstract»

A design method to find the best tuning parameters for a proportional-integral-derivative controller is presented. The procedure uses a time-domain optimization technique to minimize the integral-squared-error response to a step input. The proposed method is evaluated for three representative examples, which show significant improvement when compared to more approximate methods. View full abstract»
