    A novel computational method is used to calculate the modes of an optical resonator.     A set of cavity modes which are coupled together by an externally synchronous driven loss modulator is considered. The nonlinear polarization of the material is taken into account, and the mode coupling for the case when many modes are coupled together is treated nearly exactly.     Forced and spontaneous phase locking of the transverse modes of a He-Ne laser have been observed in the form of a scanning fundamental beam. Scans of about four resolvable spots were obtained by locking approximately seven modes with a tilting mirror modulator.
