A framework to explore how the information supplied by circles in the Nyquist plane can be recovered in the RL plane. In this article, all circle criteria (including off-axis circles) in the frequency domain can be reformulated as complete root contours. In this way, some difficulties of analysis in the frequency domain are overcome by means of the Evans technique (1948, 1950). Applications to pha... View full abstract»

The article begins with a review of electronic driver assisting systems such as ABS, traction control, electronic stability control, and brake assistant. We then review drive-by-wire systems with and without mechanical backup. Drive-by-wire systems consist of an operating unit with an electrical output, haptic feedback to the driver, bus systems, microcomputers, power electronics, and electrical a... View full abstract»

The article discusses the use of latent variable models based on historical data and examines their potential and limitations for improving operations for both batch and continuous processes. The use of these models for multivariate statistical process monitoring, abnormal situation detection, and fault diagnosis is demonstrated. Examples from state-of-the-art major industrial applications current... View full abstract»

The article seeks to answer the question: how can relevant information be extracted from huge historical databases? A pattern-matching methodology has been evaluated in a case study for a batch fermentation process. The proposed approach is both data driven and unsupervised. The new approach relies on PCA and a new similarity factor based on distance between the two datasets. The computational req... View full abstract»
