Voltage sag produced by an induction motor starting current is a main cause of sensitive equipment dropout. The use of a motor starter reduces the voltage sag depth but increases its duration. The subsequent connection to full voltage produces a new sag separated from the first one by a few seconds. A simple method is presented that allows us to transform the information of starting current/time c... View full abstract»

California went to a competitive market structure to capture the efficiency benefits of supplier competition through lower prices. This worked when there was a surplus but the efficiency savings were overwhelmed by increased costs measured in tens of billions of dollars when the market stopped functioning. The government has stepped in to provide price stability and reliability. The new industry s... View full abstract»

A new technique for analyzing partial discharge (PD) signals based on ultra-high frequency (UHF) measurements is presented, using results from site tests. Signals from simultaneously active discharge sources can be mapped according to their point of origin in a manner that will simplify the interpretation of phase-resolved discharge patterns. The scheme has the potential to allow automated locatio... View full abstract»

The performance of electric power networks may be largely affected by ice accretion on outdoor insulation equipment, . There still exists a lack in the understanding of the physical phenomena involved and the role of different parameters in the processes of discharge initiation and arc development on ice surfaces. The present study reports on an application of ultra high-speed photography to recor... View full abstract»

Most countries that have recently reformed their energy sectors are looking carefully at California. An unprecedented electric power deficit has affected one of the main economies of the world, threatening to bankrupt two utilities and having a devastating impact on other economic activities. In Brazil, the government hurries to point out the differences between its situation and that of Californi... View full abstract»
