Fibre distributed data interface (FDDI) is a local-area network that supports data transmission at 100 Mbit/s using token passing. It supports synchronous and asynchronous data transmissions and allows each station to have multiple classes of asynchronous data. The performance of a homogeneous FDDI network is considered for multiple classes of traffic. The model presented can be used to evaluate t... View full abstract»

  • Efficient implementations of search trees on parallel distributed memory architectures

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):394 - 400
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (608 KB)

A scheme for maintaining a balanced search tree on a distributed memory parallel architecture is described. A general 2P-2-2P (for integer P>or=3) search tree is introduced with a linear array of up to (log2 N/(P-2))+1 processors being used to implement such a search tree. As many as ((log2 N/(P-2))+1)/2 operations can execute concurrently. Insertion and... View full abstract»

  • Reed-Muller expansions with fixed and mixed polarities over GF(4)

The representation of quaternary switching functions by means of Reed-Muller algebraic expansions described over the Galois field GF(4) is discussed. An evaluation of the cost, in terms of basic field operations, is given for performing the fundamental transforms and for searching the optimum fixed polarity expansion. The existence of a very large number of consistent mixed polarity canonical form... View full abstract»

  • Real-time video data compression system

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):337 - 342

The paper describes a system for capturing and compressing video data in real time. It has principally been used for recording activity on the screen of computer workstations. Its main application has been in evaluating the useability of computer based products from a human factors point of view, as it allows the replay of screen displays with the same high fidelity as the original computer system... • Transputer implementation of systolic arrays for model reduction

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):343 - 352
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (728 KB)

The author develops a unified bidirectional linear systolic array for performing model reduction of a feedback control system using continued fractions. The array is capable of computing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Cauer forms of the fraction and their associated inverses as well as the Routh stability criterion. Timing graphs are presented to indicate the speed-up obtained on five transputers for common... View full abstract»

  • Synthesis of tributary switching networks by spectral means

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):353 - 358
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (436 KB)

A spectral approach to the synthesis of a tributary switching network (TRIB), that is the irredundant Maitra cascade is presented. The properties of Boolean functions which are TRIB-realisable are defined in the Rademacher-Walsh spectral domain. An algorithm for realising a TRIB based on these properties is given. The procedure is quite efficient for hand computation and computer operation. The me... View full abstract»

  • Single-chip microcomputer based intelligent sensors for home automation network

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):359 - 365
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (464 KB)

An intelligent sensor home automation network based on TMS7000 family of single-chip microcomputers is presented. This network could be applied to energy management, security or control of domestic equipment in individual houses. The intelligent sensors are connected to a central station by means of central heating pipes which play the role of energy supply and information transmission lines, henc... View full abstract»

  • Efficient algorithm for canonical Reed-Muller expansions of Boolean functions

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):366 - 370

The paper presents a new method for computing all 2n canonical Reed-Muller forms (RMC forms) of a Boolean function. The method constructs the coefficients directly and no matrix-multiplication is needed. It is also usable for incompletely specified functions and for calculating a single RMC form. The method exhibits a high degree of parallelism. View full abstract»

  • Intelligent natural language interface for a signal processing system

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):371 - 379
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (756 KB)

An intelligent natural language interface to a signal processing system is described. Users type commands to the interface in a form of English orientated towards mathematical operations. The interface will interpret them, and if the commands are known to the interface, it will execute them. If any commands are unknown to the interface, a dialogue will be initialised whereby the system will seek c... View full abstract»
