Environmental questions that involve temperature and heat dissipation are discussed. A description is given of work on passive (no machinery to move coolant) cooling techniques, which can replace active (machinery-powered) cooling systems, and studies to ascertain the effect of temperature on equipment reliability. The following conclusions are reached. Passive cooling techniques can produce tempe... View full abstract»

The possible benefits of using ground power to accelerate the airplane on a launch ramp are quantified. A passenger-carrying hypersonic airplane leaving its loading ramp carries fuel for acceleration, cruise and landing. For example, a 230-passenger plane starting a Mach 5 trans-Pacific flight will be loaded with 80 metric tons of liquid hydrogen, up to 40% of which is burned in generating kinetic... The US Navy has more than 300 ships equipped with over 500 PHALANX weapon systems. Ordalts (ordnance alterations) and casreps (casualty reports) are received frequently by Naval Ordnance. Ordalts are done when parts need replacing or a design is exchanged for an old. Casreps are an urgent request for parts or service. Information pertaining to ordalts and casreps is put into several databases, whi... View full abstract»
