The author introduces the principles, fabrication techniques, and recent progress of planar-type arrayed-waveguide-grating (AWG) multi/demultiplexers, which have been developed for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-based photonic networks. The AWG has already been used in point-to-point WDM systems and is a key component in the construction of flexible and large-capacity WDM networks. This is... View full abstract»

Presents a philosophy underlying the design of a few advanced and graduate courses at ASU in the subdisciplines of HDLs, communications networks, computer-aided design of digital systems, distributed systems, distributed algorithms, and modeling and simulation. The philosophy has given rise to a new metric-the extent and significance of the knowledge “discovered” by the students, towar... View full abstract»

In this paper, a new approach to the carry-bits calculation is proposed, parallel within the limits of component ideality. Such an approach shows that, from a logical point of view, the parallel carry-bits calculation is no more complex than the sequential calculation. An example of implementation in TTL is given and a SPICE simulation is carried out. The solution is compared to a traditional one,... View full abstract»
