In this letter an approach for fitting saturation characteristic and hysteresis using arctangent functions is presented. It has direct application to modeling transformers and electric machines. The approach is based on measurements of the magnetizing curve of the ferromagnetic material. The analytical form of the characteristic can be completely described by only three parameters. These three par... View full abstract»

This article presents a comparative study of the performance of two types of battery chargers being developed for electric vehicles. The first charger is a microprocessor-based ferroresonant battery charger, referred to as the ferroresonant charger. The power delivery section of this charger is a ferroresonant transformer, which exploits the saturation of magnetic materials through its capacitor w... View full abstract»

Whenever a new battery type is considered, it is important to use life-cycle cost analysis that weighs all costs associated with battery ownership over a certain period of time, including the replacement of shorter-life batteries and all associated maintenance and testing activities. This article discusses the benefits and drawbacks of some of the potential alternatives to vented lead-acid batteri... View full abstract»

This letter considers the multiyear transmission expansion planning model HIPER (acronym of its name in Spanish: “Herramienta Interactiva para la Planeacion de la Expansion de la Red”), developed for application in deregulated environments. HIPER allows transmission planning under great uncertainties, such as the generation expansion, by defining strategic scenarios to reflect the poss... View full abstract»
