A new approach for the quick estimation of error rates for complex communication schemes is presented. The purpose is to decrease the computations needed for analysing and simulating the performance in terms of error rates. By conditioning the error rate on the instantaneous noise energy, the error rate can be partly analysed by numerical calculations. Simulations, in the form of importance sampli... • Characterisation of Singapore One ATM network

The statistics of cell loss at both burst and cell levels are studied by simulation based on the configuration of the Singapore One ATM network. A virtual connection through the Singapore One network is modelled as a tandem queueing network to which mixtures of homogeneous discrete-time burst-silence traffic with different burst lengths are offered. Attention is focused on a designated traffic str... View full abstract»

  • Concurrent error detection and fault location in a gracefully degrading ATM switch

    Publication Year: 1999, Page(s):379 - 384

The authors present a concurrent error detection and fault location technique for a gracefully degrading ATM switch. The switch architecture has multiple data and control planes, each of which has an identical banyan topology. Cell headers are routed via the control planes to reserve their routing paths on the data planes. Multiplicity of data planes for enhancing performance is utilised to detect... View full abstract»

  • Minimum-SER linear-combiner decision feedback equaliser

The paper considers the conventional decision feedback equaliser (DFE) that employs a linear combination of the channel observations and past decisions. An expression of the symbol error rate (SER) is derived for the linear-combiner DFE with the general M-PAM constellation by utilising a geometric translation property of decision feedback. A method is developed to optimise the coefficients of the ... View full abstract»

  • Integrated error control and power control for DS-CDMA multimedia wireless communications

The paper studies a packetised direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) wireless network for providing multimedia services to mobile users. A strategy for integrating transmission error control with power control is presented and evaluated for the reverse link transmission where orthogonal signalling and noncoherent demodulation are necessary. For delay insensitive traffic requiring... View full abstract»

  • Simple and channel efficient scheme for voice data integration over PRMA

A channel efficient, slot stealing scheme for data integrated into packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) systems is proposed in the paper. In the proposed system, data terminals transmit their packets only on the time slots which are not used by voice terminals, while voice terminals operate according to the PRMA protocol with either fixed or varying retransmission probability. The maximum ach... View full abstract»

  • Decentralised call admission control for wireless ATM

    Publication Year: 1999, Page(s):366 - 371

A new mobility-specific call admission control (CAC), using a decentralised approach, is introduced. This new CAC reduces the load on the mobility-supporting (MS) ATM switch and prevents it from becoming a bottleneck in the system. The proposed decentralised CAC is executed partially in the serving access point (AP) and partially at the MS-ATM switch. An estimate of the network traffic load is der... View full abstract»

The introduction of global mobile personal communications by satellite (GMPCS) systems makes it possible to provide high-quality services, especially by using low Earth orbit (LEO) or medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites. In mobile satellite communication systems such as GMPCS systems, error correcting coding schemes are needed to achieve a desirable quality of service, and the coding scheme should...
