The article provides a summary of a recent Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Report of a major accident at an oil refinery and highlights some lessons for control engineers. It reviews an HSE survey into the management of alarm systems in chemical and power plants. The accident described in the article was serious-but if it had occurred on a weekday it could have been much worse with multiple deat... View full abstract»

An important area of Java development is to create Java based software or tools with the capability of accessing databases over the Internet. JDBC and its various properties are explored. Several Java based technical approaches for accessing databases on the Internet are proposed and investigated in detail. A design and implementation of the Java software for accessing databases on the Internet is... View full abstract»

A brief overview of instability mechanisms in a class of hybrid systems is presented. The class of systems considered are those which are constructed by switching between linear time invariant systems with real distinct eigenvalues. Modal analysis is used not only to provide insights into instability mechanisms in such systems, but also to suggest stable design laws. View full abstract»

Specialised centres for the application of technology to help people with disabilities are now common in most developed countries. The provision of an effective service delivery system requires consideration of the person's needs, the finance available, and the degree to which the user can be supported both technically and therapeutically. Due to the dispersed nature of the disabled population, th... View full abstract»

Alarm systems play an important role in maintaining the safe operation of process plant. Poor alarm system performance can result in critical events being missed by the plant operator, and there have been several cases of this contributing to major plant accidents. Consequently the design and management of alarm systems is receiving increasing attention. The article presents the results of a surve... View full abstract»
