Universities-internationally-are confronting a revolution. While these institutions of higher education have evolved over the past centuries, the pace of change has not been as rapid as it is at the moment. This a because, at one level, the culture is changing, universities are moving from institutions which have been based on print, and the written word, to institutions that are part of the new d... J.J. Thomson discovered the electron a hundred years ago, but he never quite accepted that the electron does not obey the classical laws of electromagnetism that he used for discovering it. This article discusses the experiments made by Thomson to measure the charge of the electron and the charge per unit mass. The interpretation by Thomson of the experimental results is outlined including the ele... View full abstract»

A novel series of aluminium-silicon alloys has been developed using the Osprey method. These high silicon (50-70 wt%) content alloys have fine, isotropic microstructure. Unlike the conventional silicon-carbide-containing metal matrix composites (MMCs), the new alloys are readily machinable using conventional carbide tools and are easily platable with nickel, copper, silver and gold. The electropla... View full abstract»

This article discusses the different issues involved in ensuring the quality of project supervision at the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong. It describes the registration procedures and allocation of project titles, which help to optimise the balance between students' interests and abilities. A good teaching strategy, assessment strategy and monitoring system are key components of a good quali... View full abstract»

This paper discusses the issues involved with the development and implementation of an on-line postgraduate course for remote-access students. This is especially relevant for students who wish to pursue postgraduate qualifications, or to update their skill base, while continuing with their career. Although remote-access education would not be considered by the author as the delivery method of choi... View full abstract»

The author discusses magnetic vector potential giving an alternative view of whether a magnetic field exists outside a toroidal winding. The author discusses circulation in circular fields, the magnetic vector potential of a toroidal winding, the current transformer worked 'backwards', and short solenoids. An appendix discusses the rate of decline with radius on a circular field on its circulation View full abstract»
