This paper describes in detail the equipment and circuit used in the production of the single sideband for trans-Atlantic radio telephony in the experiments at Rocky Point. The set consists of two oscillators, two sets of modulators, two filters, and a three-stage amplifier. The oscillators and modulators operate at power levels similar to those in high-frequency communication on land wires. The t... View full abstract»

We review the issue of possible health effects from low-level nonionizing electromagnetic fields from the perspective of risk assessment, in particular cancer risk assessment. We define risk and describe briefly the weight-of-evidence criteria used by agencies (in particular the Environmental Protection Agency and the International Agency for Research on Cancer) in their classification of carcinog... Approximately 2 billion people, mainly in Third World countries, are not connected to an electric grid. The standard, centralized grid development is too expensive and time consuming to solve the energy demand problem. Therefore, there is a need for decentralized renewable energy sources. The main attractiveness of solar cells is that they generate electricity directly from sunlight and can be mou... View full abstract»

This is a chronicle of how the Proceedings of the IRE documented and influenced the changes in electronic devices and systems that took place during the years from 1938 through 1962, the second quarter-century of the Institute of Radio Engineers. The first years of this period were dominated by World War II and the development of radar systems and related devices such as the high-power cavity magn... View full abstract»
