  • Synchronous optical detection unmasked

    We presented a new silicon optoelectronic receiver in standard CMOS for synchronous detection of light. Two versions were implemented in a 0.7-μm N-well CMOS technology and tested. In the better version, the light-sensitive junctions were the drains of NMOSFETs. This version operated at up to 180 MHz with external 830-nm light pulses of 176 fJ. Our new receiver shows an excellent trade-off between small size, high speed, and good sensitivity, and is therefore an interesting candidate for applications such as digital optical information transfer between VLSI circuits.   • Effective technical communications

    Effective technical communication is becoming more and more imperative in the success of just about any business enterprise, whether for-profit or not-for-profit, large or small, regardless of the industry or markets. Creating an impact is critical. In order to create that impact, the message must be carefully distilled for clarity, accuracy, and conciseness.   • Low-cost packaging of semiconductor laser arrays

    This article reports on a passive self-alignment technique that we developed for semiconductor waveguide array packaging. A flip-chip Si-motherboard technique is described for the packaging of 4-, 8-, and 12-channel 980 nm laser arrays with fiber ribbons. A major aspect of this development is also to show that minor modifications on an existing laser fabrication process, carried out at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, and a specially developed motherboard from our lab, allow a passive self-aligned packaging process View full abstract»

  • High-speed memory architectures for multimedia applications

    In order to meet the requirements for multimedia applications, several approaches to DRAM architecture have emerged. Instead of a single, common memory device, several advanced approaches, such as extended data out (EDO) DRAM, and synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) will each play a major role in the future memory market. Furthermore, advanced interface technologies, such as Rambus RAM (RDRAM), RamLink, and SyncLink are very promising for future-generation memory. Also, application-specific memory, such as cache DRAM (CDRAM), enhanced DRAM (EDRAM), and video DRAM (VRAM) offer unique characteristics to improve performance in particular applications. Since it is beneficial to understand which type of high-speed memory can improve the speed performance of a particular system most effectively, this article discusses the fundamental concepts of these recent high-speed performance memory architectures to aid in the selection of memories for multimedia applications View full abstract»

    The conception, design fabrication, and test of a demonstrator of a low-cost flowmeter for washing machines and other home appliances has been described in this article. Mechanical, thermal, and electric simulations were required to set the parameters of the system, and links between thermal and electrical domains were established through SPICE-equivalent circuits. Closed-loop measurements using a electro-thermal sigma-delta converter improve the linearity compared with open-loop differential voltage measurements.
