Crowdsourcing refers to a distributed problem-solving model in which a crowd of undefined size is engaged in the task of solving a complex problem through an open call. This novel problem-solving model found its way into numerous applications on the web for voting, fund-raising, micro-works and wisdom-of-the-crowd scenarios. On the other hand, the shift of desktop users to mobile platforms in the ... View full abstract»

In the first part, we start by giving a quick overview of social networking services (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), their evolution, and how they impact the society. Similarly, we explain, through examples and case studies, how the widespread of mobile devices changed the computing paradigm in a way that impacted our daily life. In the second part, we present state-of-the-art research that lies within... View full abstract»

With the prevalence of mobile computing systems and location based services, the research interest on spatiotemporal data has significantly increased, as evidenced by the collection of huge amounts of movement data. Consequently, this type of data raises several issues, namely in the research area of geographic information visualization. Despite the existence of several visual analysis techniques ... Due to recent advances in communications and computing devices, vehicular networks are attracting a lot of research attention. In a vehicular ad hoc network the nodes are vehicles which communicate among themselves by using shortrange wireless communications. These vehicles can store and share certain data (e.g., regarding the surrounding traffic and environment) which can be used, for example, to... View full abstract»

For visually impaired users one of the major challenges is unassisted orientation and way-finding, especially in unexplored and potentially dangerous environments. The following work analyzes the issues stemmed from this problem and summarizes the merits and flaws of solutions available in literature. Afterwards, the research methodology is briefly described and the already achieved results are li... View full abstract»

In recent years there has been a growing increase in the number of users that use social networks as a form of expression and sharing. These networks of social relationships are by now widespread thanks both to the growing availability of fast Internet connections and the spread of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. In particular, the capability of these latest generation mobile devic... View full abstract»

Mobile systems which include sensor networks, generate a continuous unmatched volume of primitive event streams with various properties where the interior semantic information of these events is generally very limited. Moreover, forwarding all these events to a central processing entity is not favored for limited-resource systems, it would deplete nodes' resources e.g., the energy. The goal of thi... In this paper, a complete platform used to compute travel times from GPS data is described. Two approaches to computing travel time are proposed one based on points and one based on trips. Overall both approaches give reasonable results compared to existing manual estimated travel times. However, the trip-based approach requires more GPS data and of a higher quality than the point-based approach. ... View full abstract»

The main reason of wasting time in search of free parking spaces is the lack of information, in particular for open/roadside parking availability. Various ICT-based solutions have been proposed to solve this issue, but still suffering from limited integration among each other and with external online services, such as touristic information services. In this paper we illustrate a modular, service-o... View full abstract»
