We define an extended version of the Semantic Web query language SPARQL called Scientific SPARQL, SciSPARQL. It is targeted mainly at scientific computing and laboratory data management. SciSPARQL includes expressions, numeric multi-dimensional array operations, user-defined functions, aggregate functions, and function views. A prototype system translates SciSPARQL to a Datalog dialect which is ex... View full abstract»

  • A Benchmark for RDF-based Metadata Management in Distributed Long-Term Digital Preservation

    Publication Year: 2012, Page(s):11 - 16

In a large variety of applications, the long-term, guaranteed availability of data is becoming increasingly important. Thus, long-term digital preservation systems have to be inherently distributed to allow content to be replicated. This affects both the preservation of the actual digital objects and their associated metadata. For the latter, RDF has become the prevalent data model. Ensuring data ... View full abstract»

  • Opaque Attribute Alignment

Ontology alignment describes a process of mapping ontological concepts, classes and attributes between different ontologies providing a way to achieve interoperability. While there has been considerable research in this area, most approaches that rely upon the alignment of attributes use labelbased string comparisons of property names. The ability to process opaque or non-interpreted attribute nam... View full abstract»

  • Linked Data and Live Querying for Enabling Support Platforms for Web Dataspaces

Enabling the "Web of Data" has recently gained increased attention, particularly driven by the success of Linked Data. The agreed need for technologies from the database domain is therein often referred to as the "Web as a Database", a concept that is still more a vision than a reality. Meanwhile, the database community proposed the notion of dataspaces managed by support platforms, as an alternat... View full abstract»

Knowledge resource reuse has become a popular approach within the ontology engineering field, mainly because it can speed up the ontology development process, saving time and money and promoting the application of good practices. The NeOn Methodology provides guidelines for reuse. These guidelines include the selection of the most appropriate knowledge resources for reuse in ontology development. ... View full abstract»

  • Online Optimization through Preprocessing for Multi-stage Production Decision Guidance Queries

    Publication Year: 2012, Page(s):41 - 48

We consider optimization problems expressed in Decision Guidance Query Language that may involve linear arithmetic constraints, as well as finite domain and binary variables, and focus on a class of Multi-Stage Production problems in which only a part of the problem is dynamic, i.e., the demand for the output product in a manufacturing process, whereas the rest of the problem is static, i.e., the ... • A Decision-Theoretic Model of Disease Surveillance and Control and a Prototype Implementation for the Disease Influenza

    Publication Year: 2012, Page(s):49 - 54
Request permission for commercial reuse | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1433 KB) | HTML iconHTML

This paper first describes a decision-theoretic model of disease surveillance and control. It then describes a prototype system for influenza monitoring based on the model. The decision-theoretic model connects disparate work epidemiological modelling and disease control under a uniform mathematical formulation. We expect that this model will stimulate new avenues of research in both fields. View full abstract»

This paper introduces the concept, design, and implementation of the Personal Health Explorer (PHE), a semantic recommender system that allows an individual to perform semantic search and discovery related to conditions and diseases contained in his personal health record. The PHE system consults authoritative ontologies and reputable information sources to provide semantically enhanced recommenda... View full abstract»

The role of the private sector in the provision of publicly funded healthcare services is the subject of increasing debate and discussion at the heart of the British Government. This paper examines the competitive strategy and knowledge management policy within the context of a private healthcare organization operating in the UK and providing psychiatric care (Cygnet Healthcare). Data collection i... View full abstract»

This paper reports on our ongoing research in ski injury analysis. We propose a decision guidance support system for early warning for ski injuries. We report several injury patterns in form of IF-THEN rules which could be used to build a decision guidance support system for early warning for ski injuries. The rules are induced from data merged from two databases, namely the Mountaineer rescue ser... View full abstract»

  • Non-parametrick Synthesis of Private Probablistic Predictions

    Publication Year: 2012, Page(s):73 - 77

This paper describes a new non-parameteric method to synthesize probabilistic predictions form different experts. In contrast to the popular linear pooling method that combines forecasts with the weights that reflect the average performance of individual experts over the entire forecast space, our method exploits the information that is local to each prediction case. A simulation study, replicated... View full abstract»
