We have developed a closed telephone system using radio waves according to the PHS standards and an Ethernet LAN according to the IEEE802.3 standards. With this system one can be directly contacted anywhere within the company, and the transfer function allows the reception of important telephone calls even when on holiday or just out of the office. We explain the problems of transmitting an audio ... View full abstract»

A 1 GHz CMOS down-conversion mixer is described. The mixer is of differential architecture where the common-mode feedback circuit is eliminated by employing robust loads. Cascode stages are used to reduce the LO-to-RF feedthrough which is measured to be -79 dB. A prototype mixer was implemented in a standard 0.8 μm CMOS process and consumes 7.3 mW at 3.3 V supply. The power conversion gain is -... View full abstract»

The transmission error code performance of an MPEG-2 transport system is studied, by analyzing the sensitivity of MPEG-2 ES, PES and TS to the transmission error code. The reconstructed images decoded from ES, PES and TS with the transmission error code are used to evaluate the error code performance. On this basis, the threshold of visibility (TOV) of MPEG-2 ES, PES and TS in the form of bit erro... View full abstract»

This paper describes a DC/DC converter intended to generate the required reverse voltage for varicap diodes used in RF resonance circuits. As its primary purpose is use in consumer RF products, the proposed design, operating from 5 V, was optimized for low cost. A novel adaptive two-stage multiuser detector is proposed for synchronous DS-CDMA communication systems. This new multiuser detector employs the first-order approximate decorrelating detector as the first stage followed by an adaptive canceller. The steepest descent algorithm is used to control the weights of the adaptive canceller. Through analysis and numerical results, we show that the proposed... View full abstract»

The Internet is the new infrastructure. It requires that we rethink the nature of devices. They no longer need be isolated. The cost of tapping into the global network is very low and the new capabilities are compelling. The designs need not be limited by what the device can do alone. We need to learn how to create such devices. What capabilities should be available locally and which can be shifte... View full abstract»

In the digital multimedia, the audio and video decoders usually use a global bus and a traffic controller to transfer data in order to reduce the hardware complexity. We developed an instantaneous sub-picture decoder architecture for the DVD system to reduce the data transfer traffic on the global bus. • An improvement of bottom-up variable-sized block matching technique for video compression

    Publication Year: 1997 , Page(s): 157 - 160

Block matching can reduce temporal redundancies. It is an important scheme in video compression. So far, there have been many methods proposed for this scheme, such as fixed-sized block matching (FSBM), top-down variable-sized block matching (TDVSBM), and bottom-up variable-sized block matching (BUVSBM). In these methods, the blocks in each frame of a video must be square, and that is why some obj... View full abstract»

In this paper, we propose a disparity estimation and stereo compression method based on dynamic programming. We introduced an occlusion indicating parameter to the cost function to take into account discontinuity and occlusion. For occluded area, occluded points are coded independently and non-occluded points are fed into the dynamic programming to find disparity vectors. Since the proposed method... View full abstract»

Speech recognition is an increasingly popular method for Chinese character input. A fast and reliable hierarchical bounding box method for searching the speech database is proposed. Video compression is an indispensable element in multimedia communications systems.
