  • Development of a didactic platform for acquisition and processing of biomedical signals for the practice in biomedical engineering

    The present paper describes the development of a didactic platform designed to support theoretical and practical learning on Biomedical Engineering themes by Electrical Engineering undergraduate students. This platform provides integrated hardware and software tools for acquisition, processing, transmission, visualization e comprehension of bioelectric signals. It includes a micro-processed base module, that allows the coupling of bioelectric signals acquisition modules (EEG, ECG, EMG, EOG), wireless communication module and visualization software for the acquired signals. Tutorials and experimental procedures on electroencephalography and electrocardiography, associated to relevant aspects of the related electro-medical tools, are presented in connection with the above mentioned hardware, through a portal Sauacutede+EducacaoTM IEB/UFSC at http://www.saudeeducacao.ufsc.br/layout.php. These tutorials include applets and virtual 3D environment resources that were tested during regular disciplines and mini-courses on Biomedical Engineering techniques.   • Virtual instrument realization of non-contact silicon wafer test

    Based on virtual instrument technology, the paper conducts organic integration of capacitive displacement sensor ranging technology, eddy current sensor resistance testing technology and semiconductor P/N polarity of infrared pulse sensor testing technology, and develops dynamic non-contact silicon wafer testing instrument, which not only simulates the testing instruments like signal generator, digital oscilloscope, programmable power supply and digital multi-meter, but also has the functions like information fusion, data management, motion control and position detection. Dynamic non-contact test is the prior method of high speed and intelligent test of solar cell silicon wafers as well as the need of large-scale production of photovoltaic industry.     A testing system based on virtual instrument is capable to test various electric parameters when frequency converter generator sets launch load or work without load, and it controls generator sets to start in series, parallel-work, control brake and self-protect. System software mainly adopts Visual Basic as programmer platform and combines NI Measurement Studio and Advantech Device Driver to design VI software. Based on layering theory, the testing system designs software frame and describes primary system running flow.   • Effect of amplitude extracted algorithm to the sampling energy resolution on digital spectrometer

    Contrasting with the data processing at the low frequency, the integrality of sampling signal must be thought at the high frequency. In this paper, some important amplitude extracted algorithms for the digital spectrometer, including peak-to-peak value, curve fitting and statistic algorithm, were researched on the LabVIEW platform. The results show that the resolution of the statistic algorithm is similar to others at the low frequency. However, at the high frequency such as the ringing phenomenon, the result with statistics algorithm is better than others, obviously. So, this algorithm has the excellent performance on the digital spectrometer. View full abstract»

    Study of integrated parameter acquisition and fusion for high-pressure water pump based on virtual instrument was carried out on software platform of LabVIEW. Multi-sensor's parameters are accessed through PCI local bus and RS-232 technology, and then information fusion is realized by three steps: multi-parameter error handling which enables accurate parameters to be acquired, applying multi-sensor data association rules which are defined by water pump's theory and performance curves fitting which forms reasonable results. Field testing indicates that results of our system agree well with the measurements provided by manufacturer and that the system is correct and effective, meeting practical requirements.   • Study on a hybrid control of inverter for programmable AC power source

    Programmable AC power sources may be widely applied to developing, testing and inspecting electronic products. High precision and rapid dynamic response are required in terms of the output of inverter - the kernel component of a programmable AC power source. Thus the control strategy of inverter has always been a research focus for programmable AC power source. In this paper, a hybrid control scheme combining digital PID control with repetitive control is proposed for dual buck half bridge inverter with hysteresis current control. The theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can help the inverter maintain a higher level of steady state precision and good dynamic characteristics.   • Research and implementation of a new orientation & incline instrument used in oil and gas wells

    A new type of oil and gas wells' orientation & incline system which is constituted of fiber optic gyroscope and MEMS accelerometer has been introduced. And the system scheme, methods of dynamic north-seeking and algorithm have been given. By the introduction of low-speed continuous rotation, the adoption of dynamic rotation mode and the using of inertial system's own output signal, the low-frequency random drift error of fiber-optic gyro is decreased, and ultimately this instrument can achieve the oil and gas wells' geographic north & Incline angle of probe quickly and accurately. The experimental results show that: the system's orientation precise is within plusmn1deg, and the level precise is within plusmn0.1deg. Besides, the system has the advantage of having solid structure, stand high temperature, high shock above 100g, more than 3000h of MTBF, more than 10 years of life expectancy.   • Novel design of a data acquisition and analysis system for surface plasmon resonance bioanalyzer using labview virtual instrument

    A novel data acquisition and analysis system has been developed for a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) bioanalyzer, which is based on the use of TSPR1k23 biosensor and composed of a microflow cell, a clamp, and a photoelectronic conversion device. A virtual instrument consists of a computer-based platform that is equipped with powerful application software and cost-effective hardware, which outperform the functions of the instrument for obtaining data from the biosensor. In this system, The PIC24HJ32GP302 microprocessor interfacing with a 16bit ADS8326 analog-to-digital converter is used to transform the photoelectronic signals from the CCD photodetector and the communication between the microprocessor and the computer is achieved through the USB-RS232C serial port converter adapter designed by CP2102 chip. The system software for describing the biomolecular interaction and sample concentration is programmed with LabVIEW graphic programming environment, which be mainly introduced in this paper. The software modules reveal important information for sensor golden surface that SPR signal can be identified as well and the values of response unit (RU), refractive index (RI) and sample concentration can be computed correspondingly. Because it is based on computer, the system's function is flexibly defined and meets user's requirement easily. This data acquisition and analysis system is more directviewing, economical, high efficient, friendly in comparison with other data acquisition and analysis system based on VB language or assemble language.   • Micro-table posture measuring based on binocular vision

    Based on binocular vision measurement principle, this paper describes a new method that measures the 3D posture of micro-table, this method can match and track the micro-table and get its three-dimensional position. We use the four corners of the table points as signalized points to describe the position and posture of the micro-table, and track the four corners by the dual-CCD cameras in the three-dimensional space, detect the changes of corners in the coordinate of the image, According to the mapping model of image coordinate system and world coordinate system, get the changes of the corners in the world coordinate, establish the posture equation of the micro-table using the four corners coordinates in order to achieve the 3D posture measurement of the micro-table.     Based on analysis of the conventional speech signal identical algorithm, an improved algorithm for the speaker recognition is introduced. It is a method based on the probabilistic neural network (PNN), which uses Mel Frequency Ceptral Coefficients(MFCC) as human sound feature parameters. The experiment has shown the high accuracy of the proposed algorithm in the classification of training samples and testing samples.     In view of the complicated traffic condition in the traffic lights monitoring-control system, the current conventional fixed-cycle traffic light control is unable to make full use of lanes. In this paper, a novel simple and economic way used the fuzzy theory to optimize the control of traffic lights for a single intersection is designed and presented based on wireless sensor network. The traffic flow can be detected by the single-axis magnetic sensors and transmitted by wireless sensor network. In order to realize a real-time dynamic control of traffic lights and to reduce the vehicles' average trip waiting time (ATWT), the time for vehicles passing during the green lights would be dynamically adjusted through the fuzzy algorithm according to the current volume of vehicles. The test results show the lanes would be more unobstructed and the efficiency of vehicles traffic at an intersection would be enhanced.   • Design of the fully digital beam position monitor for beam position measurement in SSRF

    Beam position monitor (BPM) is an important part of beam diagnosis for accelerators. BPM processes the voltages signals of position-sensitive detectors (PSD) to retrieve beam position information. A BPM has been designed for Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. By applying Software Defined Radio technology, a fully digital architecture is implemented. The four channels of periodic pulses from button-type PSDs are bandpass filtered, amplified to get 500 MHz sinusoids. Four under-sampling ADCs digitalize these sinusoids. The sampled IF signals are decimated by a ratio of 169 with digital down-converters (DDC) implemented in FPGA. IQ data of DDC are sent to cordic blocks and converted to amplitude and phase data. Amplitude data is x and y position of beams. The initial test result shows that amplitude RMS uncertainty is about -73 dB. It may results in -79 dB RMS uncertainty of beam position.   • Electrostatic force generation circuit for single-side electrostatic suspension

    For the sake of observing the balance state of the spherical rotor, a newly-designed single-side electrostatic suspension system is developed. An electrostatic force generation circuit including an amplitude modulator, a power amplifier, a pair of peak detectors, and a voltage feedback channel is proposed. Furthermore, the output transformer using a nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloy is designed to achieve fast dynamic response, low power consumption, and excellent thermal stability. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the electrostatic force generation circuit over classical amplifiers in terms of dynamic response, power consumption, and long-time stability using a carrier frequency of 4.2 kHz and the closed-loop control scheme.     Since its release in 1998, the PXI industry standard has quickly developed in varieties of general industrial measurements and automation systems. In this paper, a kind of data acquisition architecture for multi-channel data acquisition systems based on PXI platforms is presented in detail. The proposed architecture model keeps a balanced equilibrium among complexity, speed, data storage memory, and performance. The aim of this architecture is to increase the capabilities of standard data acquisition systems by adding more input channels and to develop data acquisition and processing applications using graphical languages like LabWindows/CVI to get a friendly UI.   • A design of PCI-bus high speed serial communication card

    This paper proposes a design of PCI bus high speed LVDS communication card, which can be widely applied in high speed serial communication of PCI-based electrical systems. The LVDS standard is deployed as front-end communication interface to implement a 120 Mbps serial communication speed within 10 meter communication distance. To promote data transaction efficiency on the PCI bus, we propose a high efficiency DMA data transition method. In the proposed DMA method, to promote PCI bus communication efficiency, we adopt continuous burst to increase the bus efficiency. Furthermore, we adopt common buffer DMA to ensure data transaction continuity. A generic method on developing WDM driver for PCI devices is also presented at the end of the paper. Comprehensive measurement experiment reflects that the PCI hardware transaction speed in this design can reach more than 120 Mbytes/second, which is highly efficient and meaningful for high speed data communication or applications alike.   • Design of a high precision current source

    Current source is one of the key components in electrical measurement and control systems. However, the noise introduced by temperature drift and other interference makes it a significant source of systematic errors. To develop a high precision and stable current source, a Howland-based voltage to current conversion (V/I) circuit is presented in this paper. The current source is fully programmable using a DSP via RS-232 interface. Moreover, a sampling circuit is provided, using the sampling results, calibration is made to further reduce the output error of the current source. Under a constant 140 Omega load, experiment results shows that current output ranges from -50 mA to +50 mA with error less than 3 muA, and features low temperature drift and distortion.     This paper introduces a process for VHDL implementation of CAN field bus modeling based on Petri nets, which includes carrying on the model to DSPN (deterministic and stochastic Petri net) of the communication behavior of CAN field bus, combining Petri net with VHDL language, using Petri net to establish the model of CAN node hardware system, describing DSPN model of CAN node by VHDL language, simulating with the EDA software, obtaining the dynamic properties of the system, improving the analysis efficiency of CAN bus network performance.   • Study and implementation of a motherboard measurement system for DVD recorders based on virtual instrument technology

    As an emerging family entertainment centre, DVD recorder is able to play home videos and record TV shows into built-in hard disk or RAM disc. Its quality plays an essential role in its market share around the world for manufacturers. Consequently, as the most important part of the DVD recorder, the motherboard is needed to be checked and measured thoroughly in the manufacturing process of DVD recorders. The measurement signals include video, audio and power supply voltage. To tackle this issue, this paper presents a motherboard measurement system by means of FPGA to control the motherboard directly based on virtual instrument technology. Measurement requirements are discussed firstly and therefore the measurement system is designed. Software modules are coded and illustrated by LabVIEW, a virtual instrument development tool of National Instrument of the US. After verification, the developed motherboard measurement system has been put into service successfully on the workshop floor of a DVD manufacturer in Dalian, China since July 2007.   • Research on polarization characteristics of hybrid optical structure IFOG

    This paper introduces a hybrid optical structure of interferometric fiber-optic gyroscope (IFOG). The IFOG is characterized by using single-mode optical fiber coupler and low-polarized light source. Through the theoretical analysis on the specialty of polarization, it makes the conclusion that the hybrid optical structure IFOG has a correspondingly lower phasic error. The testing results confirm that the IFOG is provided with considerable precision and performance. The gyro bias stability can get up to 0.008deg/h (room temperature), wide range of temperature (-40~60degC) better than 0.5deg/h and, could satisfy the need of high-precision inertial navigation.     Ultrasonic sensors are widespread in the process industry for example to measure flow, filling level, density or substance concentration in liquid mixtures today. On one side technically high demands are made to the ultrasonic sensors on the other side the production of the ultrasonic sensors has to be more and more cost-efficient. Today, these two contrary demands only can be met by the use of efficient development tools.     The ultrasonic flow measurement system measures the propagation time difference in opposite directions on a fixed way to calculate the flow speed. The system uses chip C8051F020 as the core, which has powerful functions in controlling, sampling and calculating, and can accomplish the control of ultrasonic impulse receiving/sending, time difference judgment and data process. The measurement system improves the sensitivity and reliability greatly. After the principle and method of the measurement system are analyzed, the design ideas and hardware circuit of the system are provided in the paper.   • Research on error compensation of measuring system based on closed vector chain method

    One errors compenstion model for measuring system is set up in this paper based on homogeneous coordinate transformation and closed vector chain method. Stiffness measuring system of the spring tubes is taken to set up the model and perform the experiments. Fistly, the coordinates and transition matrix are set up to describe the relations of components in the measuring system and their deformation. Secondly, the relation between the ideal deformation and the deformation noise is deduced based on homogeneous coordinate transformation and vector chain method. Therefore, the deformation error compensation can be modeled. Lastly, It's proved by experiments that the error compensation model proposed in this paper can improve the measuring accuracy and reduce the non-repetitive error. View full abstract»

    The efficient scheduling is crucial to QoS (quality of service) provisioning for multimedia flows. In this paper, we study on the scheduling algorithms for mobile WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) based on IEEE 802.16e. Considering the states of queues, the channel conditions and the QoS requirements of service classes, we propose a cross-layer designed scheduling algorithm called DMIA (dynamic MCS and interference aware scheduling algorithm) for the uplink of WiMAX. Our algorithm can dynamically adapt the varying modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and the interferences in wireless channel. The simulations for the IEEE 802.16 system indicate that the proposed algorithm provides efficient QoS scheduling without starving the connections at low priority. View full abstract»

  • Comparison of absorbing boundary conditions of FDTD in high frequency electromagnetic field simulation

    In the application of finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to simulate high frequency electromagnetic field distribution in space, not only the contribution of the incident electromagnetic waves, but also influence of reflection electromagnetic waves should be considered. Two kinds of typical absorbing boundary conditions algorithm of the FDTD method are present, which are PML absorbing boundary conditions and Mur's absorbing boundary conditions. Based upon the programming language of MATLAB, the FDTD method is realized. Comparisons of the PML absorbing boundary and Mur's absorbing boundary are made by the simulation of two-dimensional electromagnetic, and the PML absorbing boundary shows more valid in theory and simulation.   • A novel effective channel order estimation algorithm based on subspace decomposition

    A novel algorithm for effective channel order estimation, NECOE, is proposed in this paper, which exploits the relation of the channel order and a special matrix constructed by ldquonoiserdquo subspace, and derives a new theorem about the special matrix. Based on the new theorem, the novel algorithm estimates the channel order by modifying the dimension of ldquonoiserdquo subspace.
