    Using RF magnetron sputtering and electronic beam lithography, a NbN microbolometer integrated with a planar logarithm periodic antenna is fabricated on a SiO2/Si (100) substrate for detecting signals from 0.05 THz to 0.4 THz. The best attainable responsivity of the device is about 100 volts per watt at 300 K. View full abstract»

  • Theoretical investigation into Cherenkov radiation in an anisotropic double-negative medium

    Cherenkov radiation for particles traveling in an unbounded anisotropic double-negative medium is theoretically investigated to obtain the analytical expressions for the Cherenkov radiation condition, Cherenkov radiation angle and inversed Cherenkov radiation. The total radiated energy (spectral density) per unit length of path is derived by using rigorous field theory. As a specific example, the effects of loss of the anisotropic double-negative medium and the effective plasma frequency on the total radiated energy per unit length of path are also discussed. It turns out that the wave vector and time-averaged Poynting vector in an anisotropic double-negative medium are, in generally, not exactly anti-parallel, and the Cherenkov radiation angle and the total radiated energy in this case is different from that in the isotropic double-negative medium.   • THz spectrum of KDP crystal

    THz time domain spectrum of KH2PO4 crystal has been measured in the range from 0.2 THz to 1.6 THz. Ultraviolet-visible-infrared spectra have been measured in the range from 190 nm to 1600 nm at the room temperature. The energy band gap Eg of KH2PO4 crystal is 5.90 eV. There is a wide band of the phonon absorption in the KDP crystal. The frequency omegaLO of the longitudinal optical phonon model LO is about 1.29times1015 Hz.     Absorption coefficient epsiv(nu) and dielectric coefficient epsiv(nu) of crystal Cr3+:LiSrAlF6 were obtained by THz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in the range of 0.2-1.2THz. The infrared transmission spectrum R(kappa) was measured from 6.7 cm-1(0.2 THz) to 4000 cm-1. There is a band of the phonon absorption in the crystal.     The terahertz refractive index n(nu) of lead tetraborate (PbB4O7) crystal decreases due to vanish of the ionic polarizabilities in sequence of the Pb2+, O2- and B3+ ions when the frequency increasing. The ionic polarizabilities are calculated by the Clausius-Mossotti relation, alphaPb is 0.428times10-24cm3 and alphao is 0.049times10-24cm3 respectively. View full abstract»

  • Design and fabrication of a 100 GHz channel-drop filter

    We have designed and are fabricating a novel passive mm-wave spectrometer based on a photonic band gap (PBG) channel-drop filter (CDF). There is a need for a compact, wide-band, versatile and configurable mm-wave spectrometer for applications in mm-wave communications, radio astronomy, and radar receivers for remote sensing and nonproliferation. The CDF spectrometer was designed to operate in the frequency range of 90-130 GHz. We have manufactured a single proof-of-principle channel-drop filter. The manufacturing process involved etching the rods on a silicon wafer and then bonding them to metallic plates. The initial testing results for the filter will be presented here. Research is also underway to explore alternative configurations of the CDF, including one with metallic rods. View full abstract»

  • Terahertz imaging for analysis of historic paintings and manuscripts

    Through the application of terahertz spectroscopy and imaging to the analysis of art, we have developed a spectral database of art materials containing more than 200 spectra of various pigments and binders. With this database, a red ink used in a thirteenth-century manuscript was identified; the results were verified by X-ray fluorescence elements mapping. Terahertz transmission spectral component analysis successfully distinguished stains on the red ink. Reflection imaging also can be used to distinguish materials. Similar techniques can be applied to construct images of specific materials on objects not only in art conservation science but also in various other industries. View full abstract»

    The present paper is devoted to the analysis of electron interaction process in the course of gyrotron switching from one mode to another. This analysis is based on the use of the Hamiltonian formalism that allows one to construct Poincare plots for different instants of switching time.   • Photonic crystals for on-off switching of sub-terahertz electromagnetic waves

    We present a sub-terahertz wave on-off switch based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC). The PC consists of a triangular hole array in high density polyethylene (HDPE). The holes are infiltrated with the nematic liquid crystal 5CB. The transmission of sub-terahertz electromagnetic waves is controlled by an electric field-induced rotation of the nematic axis of the 5CB molecules. The measured extinction ratio of the switch is 13.3 dB at 91GHz. Experimental results are in good agreement with simulations. View full abstract»

    The design for a 0.3 THz 400 W CW gyro-monotron is done and TE06 operating mode is chosen in the paper. The RF cavity mode field distribution and the diffraction Q value is optimized using HFSS software, so the starting current and operating magnetic field is chosen to restrain the mode competition. The simulation results including the peak output power 400 W and the electron efficiency 20% in the frequency spetrum 301.1 GHz are obtained by the beam-wave interaction simulation software.
