This tutorial will review the evolution of wireless communications in China. We begin with a discussion of 3G licenses being issued in China. As a result, three different 3G licenses were granted to the three newly restructured service providers. Though the 3G evolution paths are different for those service providers, all of them have chosen LTE as their future technology; similar to many other major service providers around the world. LTE has two modes: TDD and FDD. China Mobile has picked TDD technology (or TD-LTE) as its future revolution and is aggressively pushing TDD field trials. In addition, Chinese government encourages LTE technologies and is investing heavily on LTE related projects including LTE and IMT-Adv. Finally, HK ASTRI has become one of the global leaders in providing TD-LTE technologies and plans to expand their leadership in TDD to LTE FDD as well.
