Abstract

Sensor networks consist of very large number of resource constrained nodes, and to properly evaluate the performance of these networks a scalable ad-hoc wireless network simulator is needed. The JiST/SWANS is a highly scalable wireless network simulator with reported results for a million node network. However, it lacks an energy model. This work presents the design and implementation of an energy model for the JiST/SWANS simulator, which enables it to account for the energy consumed by wireless ad hoc and sensor networks' protocols. The instrumented energy model is validated through simulation. Results using JiST/SWANS and ns-2 are obtained and compared for similar network scenarios.
