The environment considered is the transmission of digitized images over wide-area networks and ISDN-standard lines, characterized by relatively low transmission speeds (64 kbit/s). Starting from a preliminary C version the authors coded the various units of the complete JPEG Baseline, and tested several parallelization schemes in order to identify bottlenecks and to obtain an easily scalable final program
